The Irish for the sunfish is "iasc gréine" 🌞 🐠

The ocean sunfish will regularly bask on their sides near the ocean's surface. With no tail fin, this bony fish does appear as unusual, using its prominent dorsal and anal fins to swim and manoeuvre our oceans.

Delighted to see the first chapter of my PhD published in the @icesmarine.bsky.social journal of marine science!

This paper discusses developing a holistic understanding of the sensitivity of fish species in our seas and offers practical recommendations for enchanced species mgmt & protection. 🦈🐟
Multiple sensitivity metrics are needed to adequately assess a species’ sensitivity for conservation and management
Abstract. Fish populations are declining globally due to increasing anthropogenic pressures. While research has been carried out to understand the impacts

This silky shark is using its nictitating membrane, a protective inner eyelid, as it swims up close to the camera. Sharks usually expose this membrane just prior to feeding, or when they encounter another shark, as a way to protect their eyes from potential injury.

This Friday, our researcher Bríd O’Connor (Marine Institute) presents a sensitivity analysis of fish species in the Northeast Atlantic—spotlighting which ones are most vulnerable and where protections may be missing.

I'm honoured to be featured on @empowerus.bsky.social series #WomenMakingWaves alongside Máire Éinniú & the legend herself, Gráinne Ní Mháille!

Irish women have always played an important role in marine communities and sciences & I'm so grateful for my little part in that 💙

It's Ireland's Women in Sport Week! 💚

Growing up I thought I was "unsporty", but I finally realised that isn't a thing. Sports are for everyone, you just need to find the right people to play with. Happy #WIS week to my fellow tag rugby-playing women from work. Can't wait to start this season! 🏉

The Florida Keys are dying. NOAA spent 13 years developing a new recovery plan for the sanctuary.

It wasn’t even some big radical proposal. It was watered down, keeping 95% of the park open to fishing, yet still a big step forward.

DeSantis vetoed it anyway.

DeSantis rejects long-planned management proposal for a Florida Keys marine sanctuary
Gov. Ron DeSantis said the plan, which took more than a decade to hammer out, failed to pave the way for artificial reefs in state waters and stripped Florida of managing its own wildlife.
