The Battlestar Galactica 2003 miniseries was really quite effective.
In three hours, so much information and lore, the stakes are perfectly set, end-of-the-world vibe, Adama, Roslin, Baltar are already fascinating, even the space battle is great despite a glaring lack of budget.
