Indeed. Unlike Charlie Kirk, you can describe and quote the Reiners' work in a glowing memorial piece.

You can't do that with Kirk—his life's work was advocating for hatred and bigotry—and the NYTimes didn't.

Honestly portraying him would have been, as they say, inconceivable.
I'm having trouble finding the "America Mourns Rob and Michelle Reiner" piece from the NY Times Editorial Board.

Sharp point from @donmoyn.bsky.social in here: Trump's immigration agenda is in no sense efficient management or successful crime fighting. It's massively wasteful, undermines public safety and harms the national interest in addition to being cruel. Read:

You'll remember that when Biden delivered an address in 2022, networks refused to air it because they said it was "political" www.washingtonpost.com/media/2022/0...
As Biden warned about democracy’s collapse, TV networks aired reruns
Broadcasters NBC, CBS and ABC usually air presidential prime-time addresses live. But they found Biden's Philadelphia speech more "political" than newsworthy.

I keep thinking—as a historian—that it’s rare when doing research to find a politician who reveals his nasty innards so blatantly—with no sense of self or shame.

Future historians who didn’t live through this will be absolutely open-mouthed.
Per @garretthaake.bsky.social, the extremely tacky "presidential wall of fame" that lines the colonnade to the West Wing now has obviously-Trump-penned plaques insulting or praising the presidents.

Exactly the same pattern that saw RFK Jr. push out CDC leadership: he cannot tolerate dissent and will use public resources to punish critics. This is what happens when the President normalizes this sort of abuse of power.

Death toll is, per US provided stats, now at 95 if I have it correct. With zero authorization from Congress. With zero evidence presented. 23 strikes.
Hegseth murdered more people today but still refuses to release the second strike video from September.

The usual suspects are trying to drag the Overton Window to permit “deport all Muslims” as acceptable rhetoric.

Consider what should be done to those people, and then drag the Overton Window to encourage that.
A million Muslims live in New York City. We belong here, as does every other New Yorker.

This is vile Islamophobia from the Councilwoman and it has no place in our city.

Not the same.
Apart from the fact the leader of the right mocked Reiner, one small difference is that Reiner's day job was making movies that people loved, while Kirk's starting point was creating enemies list of professors to be fired or harassed. These are not the same things.

One, Rob Reiner, lived a life of humanity and achievement. He brought us delight and joy. His memory will be a blessing.

The other, Donald Trump, will be remembered as an embarrassment to our nation.

The findings on the cost of Brexit--a loss of 6-8% of GDP and it's not over--can be thought of as the cost of not redistributing in a way that ensures widespread benefits from growth. Instead of an equity-efficiency trade-off, equity might have helped foster more efficiency in this case.
🚨📉 Major new paper by Stanford professor Nick Bloom and coauthors.

They find Brexit has:

⬇️ Reduced UK GDP by 6-8%

⬇️ Reduced investment by 12-18%

⬇️ Reduced employment by 3-4%

⬇️ Reduced productivity by 3-4%

Rob Reiner made some great movies but he was also unafraid to speak the truth, and was one of the public voices who knew you don’t squander your platform, and only got louder about opposing evil fucks as he got older. Legend.
