Morning! I did a lil analysis and turns out that, when ED employees are illegally fired and contracts are canceled, ED is unable to fulfill its congressional mandate to publish national statistics on the condition of education.

Why does that matter? Well...

www.brookings.edu/articles/the...
Screenshot of policy brief that reads: This delay (or outright refusal) to compile a robust COE weakens our nation’s ability to accurately assess the current condition of education and the progress we have made. Policy actors such as the Congressional Research Service use Digest tables. Scholars leverage the COE to explain in policy briefs the effects of K-12 class-size reduction policies or whether an “enrollment cliff” actually looms for higher education. The press also uses this data to help the public understand issues like the rise in total cost of attendance at colleges and universities or challenges in the teacher labor market in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I quibble on which parts of project 2025 I think this is about but the general thrust is correct and I hope Penn admin pay attention to their [checks notes] 2025 pulitzer prize winning faculty member

(I don't care about the awards people have but I know they do)

Re: the difference in information environments between the US and UK available for applicants, one of the largest culprits of poor funneling is, imho as a former UK academic staff member, the ill designed National Student Survey.

Something grimly predictable about the way that the conversation about 'ripoff degrees' in the UK is always about degrees that aren't rip-offs, but are instead fairly obvious 'this student has chosen something unlikely to pay off economically' rather than the short tail of crap business degrees:
Everyone needs educating in the fight over university degrees
Political confusion over the purpose of these institutions means the obvious fixes are being neglected

JUST IN: The Republican Mayor of Fairbanks, Alaska’s second biggest city, lost re-election last night to a Democrat.

Mayor David Pruhs is a conservative who fought protections for LGBTQ+ residents; he made comments this year drew condemnation this year from Alaska Natives. He lost to Mindy O'Neall.

I rarely post, but I thought it meaningful to share this beautiful tribute to a really special colleague, Mark Helmsing, written by his sister. Wanted to share in case anyone knew Mark from Mason, MSU, or academic circles, and just so others will learn about him

I have never done that. I think part of the challenge is what does "successful" mean? Also, that's a bimodal distribution where some people leave college without a degree because there were too many barriers (like cost) and others who leave because their family has enough money so it doesn't matter.

I hope they are right, but that level of additions with slowing growth would eviscerate coal. The unambitious NDC leaves me very worried that China has yet to figure out _if_ it is going to wind down coal in the next five years let alone knows _how_ it will do so. More coming soon.

I'm doing two massive projects right now and one involves looking at where people earned their doctorates before winning a very, very fancy thing and boy Stanford can't even see Cal it's so far ahead

my favorite Cal vs Stanford dunk is Cal pointing out that the periodic table contains Berkelium and Californium but no Stanfordium

(also Seaborgium, which is named after a Cal Nobel prize winner and is an anagram of Go Bears)
Graphic with Berkelium and Californium but still no “Stanfurdium”

Working on writing up a short note (and blog post) trying to explain the distinction between model-based and design-based identification.

Any questions regarding this that are burning for you?
