I am a high school science teacher with an urban NY district (NOT the City). I have cats and dogs and love videos of all animals. I volunteer for a wildlife rehabilitation center near me. I enjoy reading, watching HGTV and home remodeling shows.

This Paul Weiss capitulation is the most disgraceful action by a major law firm in my lifetime, so appalling that I couldn’t believe it at first.

Any lawyers at that firm—partners or associates—who don’t promptly resign will defile their moral and professional reputations beyond repair.

I want to live in an America that has a living wage for every person

I want to live in an America where you have free speech to express yourself and not be afraid of being put on a list or deported.

“Our next generation of researchers are now poised on the edge of this cliff, not knowing if there’s going to be a bridge that’s going to get them to the other side, or if this is it”

Musk and Trump are blowing up science careers for every STEM student.

Let's debunk this whole "space is hard" mantra.

Looking at all NASA-led missions launched since 2000, only 4 out of ~60 missions experienced total failures.

Two of these were due to issues with the commercial launch vehicle, & two were spacecraft issues.

That is a *93% success rate.* (1/n)

Elon Musk's plan to cut the Social Security Administration's staff by 50% would cause 37,000 more Americans to die each year waiting to receive their disability benefits while the average wait time to collect these benefits would jump to 412 days.

That is beyond unacceptable.

This suit “hits upon the lawless absurdity of these developments: the legally unfounded DOGE is seizing a congressionally approved and funded agency, with leadership appointed according to the law, and destroying it without any legal justification or authority.”

What does solidarity look like?

What concrete actions can we collectively take to support the students, staff & faculty of Columbia right now?

Now that we see this line of attack clearly, how can we brace ourselves against it?
This is truly depraved. The goal is to force universities into even more extreme violence against protesters and suppression of free speech.

Being a historian, people ask me if I think the US is living through Germany 1933.

I answer no, analogies are always imperfect but to me it feels more like Russia 1999: a blatant theft of state assets and liberals in a fugue state, refusing to believe the arc of progress is bending against them.

Today, we honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who, 60 years ago, marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, risking everything for the right to vote and the promise of true freedom. Their courage paved the way, and it’s on us to keep pushing forward.
