I am not sure how much people realize the importance of clear, objective data in the running of a democracy and economy. Those who depend on disinformation and deception to achieve economic and political power will naturally work to suppress scientific evidence and reliable statistics.
It's all too obvious why any regime as unpopular as the current one would work so hard to silence public data infrastructure
