The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.

The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.

People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.

And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

Tonight’s Senate vote on the federal government shutdown should have been a time for strength.

Instead we saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans.

The American people need more from their leaders.

@kermodeandmayo.bsky.social just wanted to point out that the first ever episode of SNL is currently on YouTube (here in the U.K.), so if you watched Saturday Night, you can now see the actual episode that was made.

The worst part

Musk is worth around $232 billion

So $250 million is about .001% of his wealth

It’s like if someone with assets of $500,000

Gave a $585 donation

So

Thanks to excessive greed and Citizens United

Not only can billionaires buy our elections

It doesn’t even cost them all that much

Does anyone else submit typos and other errors through Kindle? And if so, do we know if that process actually works?

@susiedent.com loving Unspeakable. Could I suggest a new word please?

Regrit. The sudden and unwelcome rush of mixed emotions—irritation, dread, and mild disbelief—that hits when you're reminded of someone you'd mentally filed away and hoped never to think about again.

Have to say, after years of following the news and politics as closely as I have, it’s proper nice to have a little holiday from it all. Anyone else taking a little mind vacation?

"Don't Engage, Just Block" absolutely IS the Bluesky motto. The notion of a "Bluesky Elder" is vaguely ridiculous but the ONE THING that we oldheads are good for is telling the new folks that blocking without engagement is praxis, and encouraging them to do it early and often.
"Don't Engage, Just Block" should be the Bluesky motto.

We have a chance to start over and make this place better than the other place.
Just blocked a retail account that spammed itself and its products into an unrelated comment thread of mine, so, retail accounts, let that be a heads up, that sort of activity is not going to work out for you here. "Don't Engage, Just Block" applies to you too, if you do things like that.

I don’t know if it’s good news. I genuinely liked Twitter (before). Sad news, perhaps.
Good news: Twitter is collapsing.

And this chart doesn't even show the last two weeks—which have seen the largest exodus in site history.

There are reports from Newsweek and others that Twitter may merge with Truth Social.

If that happens, the last collapse of Twitter may happen almost overnight.

The thing I miss about (old) Twitter was its usefulness as a news resource. Hoping this place will be that new resource so please do point me in the direction of credible news sources!

The slow trickle of MAGA folks over here underscores how much their experience of online is entirely dependent on people getting mad at them. It also underscores how even they, given the option, would rather not hang out with themselves either.
