Today is Woodworking's PUB DAY. I'm so proud of this book, and I'm so glad to hear how many of you have bought and enjoyed it already!

You can buy it here if you're so inclined: bookshop.org/p/books/wood...

And now, the hardest sell I can think of, this book's biggest advocate has thoughts:

It is a tale
Told by an idiot

Depends on if you're from the eastern half or western half of the state. Minneapolis teams in the east; Denver teams in the west. I was never into those teams, though, because I was cool.

I worked in Milwaukee for a year after college! I'm also loosely a Bucks fan.

I will be honest: I have family who love the Tigers, but if they bounce the Mariners, I may have to go all in on the Dodgers again. Think about the consequences of your actions, Detroit!!!!!!

If the World Series is Mariners v. Brewers, I will be so very happy, and I will also be fucking insufferable about the one-season existence of the Seattle Pilots (who moved to Milwaukee and became the Brewers). In every conversation about ANYthing, I will be, like, "But did you know....."
emilystjams.bsky.social
I still have a greater rooting interest in the Mariners and Brewers (who are my third- and second-favorite teams respectively), but if they're both bounced, prepare for me to be awful.

I was fully prepared to be gracious this season and be glad when a team other than the Dodgers won, since they just won last year, and I love variety and THE GREAT SPORT OF BASEBALL, but every step closer to a repeat title that they get, a dark and terrible beast within me awakens slightly more.

Of all the clerics they could have popped, those ICE idiots had to hit Hot Priest.
Presbyterian minister David Black on CNN, who was shot with pepper balls while praying outside an ICE facility.

It takes an hour-plus for the titular yearling to show up. Deer needed a better agent.
emilystjams.bsky.social
For a movie named The Yearling, The Yearling has less yearling-related content than you'd expect.

Modern Hollywood needs better haters.
Wikipedia screenshot: When Olivia de Havilland won the Best Actress Oscar, her sister, Joan Fontaine, attempted to shake her hand, but she refused the handshake, saying, "I don't know why she does that when she knows how I feel."

I don't even remember what the aforementioned paper was about. Possibly the Grail Quest and death? I think I cited Sierra Online's Conquests of Camelot?

I am finally getting old enough that I can't just pull an all-nighter and push some project over the finish line because now my body WHINES if it doesn't get enough SLEEP, and it's awful. I used to work 16-hour days at The A.V. Club! I should not have done that, but I COULD. Is the point.

A professor let me write one double-length paper across two classes I took from him. It counted for basically all of my grade. I wrote 20 pages in three hours a few days before Christmas and got an A.

This had a deleterious effect on my belief that I shouldn't just wing it in important situations.

I wrote a 15 page report on heraldic symbolism in medieval armor and weapon design for my art history class the night before it was due (8am class). Made up 90% of it (only found one book for reference) and got an A. GenAI could fucking never.
wrote 20 pages on Faulkner's The Bear four hours before final papers were due on trucker pills and coffee and cigarettes and got an A, fuck you.
You people couldn't hang with real slackers.

booo, Amazon

I haven't watched nearly enough Gilligan, but I do think the very first Columbo (the Spielberg-directed, Bochco-scripted one) is pretty much perfect.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

repost this if an editor has ever saved you from yourself

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Oh lordy. I heard these stories from various people involved. If you want to work in TV, or just are curious about how thoroughly things can go wrong, definitely check this out.

How could a straight-to-series greenlight go so wrong for the first TV series I ever created?! Today, the 5AM StoryTalk Podcast brings you Part 1 of a four-part Hollywood horror story I describe as a cautionary tale for screenwriters about what can happen when all your dreams come true.
