Today is Woodworking's PUB DAY. I'm so proud of this book, and I'm so glad to hear how many of you have bought and enjoyed it already!

You can buy it here if you're so inclined: bookshop.org/p/books/wood...

And now, the hardest sell I can think of, this book's biggest advocate has thoughts:
We get fast food, and it’s one of my favorite traditions.
what do you folks cook for Christmas Eve? We do tamales and chili in our family.
Cannot recommend Christmas Chili enough

This is very good. Clear, calm, factual, and devastating for proponents of bans on puberty blockers for trans youth.

Puberty blockers: why politicians overriding doctors sets a dangerous precedent
The government’s ban on puberty blockers undermines clinical expertise and targets trans youth with a policy that lacks evidence, consistency and fairness.

“Frog, can you be as wonderful as this?” said Toad as he danced all over the stage.

There was no answer.

Watched the new Fantastic Four, and it’s fascinating how both it and Superman independently arrived at the same conclusions about how to get around superhero fatigue, with vastly different ideas about how to execute that. I preferred Superman but liked what F4 was going for.

Watching the Sabrina Carpenter stream again (for my sins), and she just had a cameo from Maya Rudolph. Many of the tiny children in the chat kept asking who she was, and one person just all-capsed "SHE IS MINNIE RIPERTON'S DAUGHTER," which is such a funny way to identify Maya Rudolph.

Rewatching some of Capra's Why We Fight docs, so I can touch on them briefly in the book, and it's striking how deeply they commit to the idea of America's strength coming from its place as a pluralist society where many diverse kinds of people come together to accomplish great things.

Skipped Part 2 so the universe acted as the great equalizer and had the man behind me in line at the pharmacy have a speakerphone convo about the five Ws of his STD contraction.

Convinced my kid to watch the Ms. Rachel potty training video by telling them it was Emmy nominated, in case you were wondering if they were my child.

Trump is a diehard believer in human inequality. He sees the wealthy as superior, yes, but even more than that, he sees people with charisma — "stars," people "out of central casting" — as a kind of unofficial Elect that walk among the rest of the hoi polloi. He reacts to ppl accordingly.

TRUMP: and this Daniel, he went into the den?

MAMDANI: The lion's den, yes

TRUMP: surely they ate him

MAMDANI: Here's the part where it gets a little Broadway: they didn't

TRUMP: Unbelievable

I really don’t like this movie and have somehow seen it four times.
This week on @podcastlikeits The 2000s @emilystjams.bsky.social and I continue our Mike Nichols’ miniseries by talking Closer with @seanfennessey.bsky.social! We discuss theatrical adaptations, Natalie Portman’s 2004 and why every character in this is pretty much a terrible human being.

When I started my criticism career, I _loved_ making annual top ten lists. By the end, I realized the process was inherently flawed and biased toward whatever thing I liked that I had watched most recently, and I resented having to do it. I had a similar relationship to star ratings!

This was almost an "all food questions" edition, but we made it about half and half. Please enjoy finding out which Bible stories we would adapt in the manner of Aronofsky's Noah, though!

It's Trans Day of Remembrance. I don't know a single trans person who hasn't lost another trans person in their circle. Please hold them in your hearts today, even if their names are new to you.

And remember all of us who are out here, doing the best we can.

All the discourse our current age has about Aaron Sorkin we would have had times 20 for Paddy Chayefsky, who took everything good and bad about Sorkin and cranked it up to 7,000.

(Network rules and is an essential American film. Kael is also right!)
[NETWORK] Chayefsky, in interviews, actually claims that he has created one of the few movie roles in which a woman is treated as an equal; this can be interpreted to mean that he thinks women who want equality are ditsey little witches. (1976)

On its surface, this seems like a terrible pitch, but I've seen enough Christmas specials to know that this is how we will all learn that Christmas isn't about the presents; it's about the LOVE.

Will my 3-year-old see it that way? We'll just have to wait and see!
The economy is GREAT!
Also, no one really NEEDS presents.
