Without any theory, machine learning has evolved a universal theory of data representation. Can we post-hoc rationalize it with math?

Congratulations to everyone who got their @neuripsconf.bsky.social papers accepted 🎉🎉🎉

At #EurIPS we are looking forward to welcoming presentations of all accepted NeurIPS papers, including a new “Salon des Refusés” track for papers which were rejected due to space constraints!

I've been using Kagi for over a year as my default search engine. It's excellent.

Hi! Anyone remember when I was saying that it might be functionally impossible to operate as a trans academic in the US in ~3-5 months, say, 3-5 months ago?

Yes, the executive auditor is expected to censor grants based on these characteristics of the grant recipient. The target is not the content of the grant by itself, it is the grant recipient and employed staff.
“(i) Discretionary awards must, where applicable, demonstrably advance the President's policy priorities.

(il) Discretionary awards shall not be used to fund, promote, encourage, subsidize, or facilitate:

(A) racial preferences or other forms of racial discrimination by the grant recipient, including activities where race or intentional proxies for race will be used as a selection criterion for employment or
program participation;

(B) denial by the grant recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic;

(C) illegal immigration; or

(D) any other initiatives that compromise public safety or promote anti-American values.

(ili) All else being equal, preference for discretionary awards should be given to institutions with lower indirect cost rates.

(iv) Discretionary grants should be given to a broad range of recipients rather than to a select group of repeat players. Research grants should be awarded to a mix of recipients likely to produce immediately demonstrable results and recipients with the potential for potentially longer-term, breakthrough results, in a manner consistent with the funding opportunity announcement”

We will present the poster on Wednesday 30th of July between 11.00 and 12.30.

If you are in Vienna, let's have a chat about representations in language models and how and when it makes sense to compare them :)

Our paper "Prediction Hubs are Context-Informed Frequent Tokens in LLMs" has been accepted at ACL 2025!

Main points:
1. Hubness is not a problem when language models do next-token prediction.
2. Nuisance hubness can appear when other comparisons are made.
