About 80% of my grammar suggestions from Microsoft Word are “why not use a simpler word here for clarity?”

No. Fuck you.

I will use a complicated word for evocative precision whenever the muse’s clarion song demands ebullience, vivacity, torpor, or solemnity, you shit-ass suck machine.

God exactly. The purpose of writing papers is FOR YOU TO THINK SOMETHING THROUGH, not because a prof has a deficit in their life that needs to be filled by reading 5-7 pages of mediocre bullshit. The bulk of things I recall from undergrad are things I wrote papers about.
I’m sorry to put it this way, but high school and college term papers, 99 percent of the time, have little value as completed work. They will never be remembered or read again. Generating them, in and of itself, is worth essentially nothing, particularly when they recapitulate existing work.

Seeing lots of misinfo flying around on the left recently. Three different things on bluesky this morning that are either factually wrong or so utterly devoid of context that they might as well be.

We're not immune to this, and it's important to read the article and check sources.

Sidenote: I'm a technologist for a very large company that pays me very well. I do not in fact need income from my writing.

With rare exceptions, I insist on being paid pro rates anyway.

Because I'm not a scab.

People in my position have a responsibility not to undercut wages.
But money and capitalism are not actually the same thing, and in the system we have right now, people who aren't paid for their work generally cannot keep doing their work.

Making sure creators get paid is how we make sure *making* art is accessible to everyone.

Oh, I see we're doing "authors are landlords" again.

Because *checks notes* one of the world's biggest companies is profiting off torrented work.

There has been a lot of chatter today about Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump, some regarding this moment when White House correspondent Brian Glenn asked if the Ukrainian president plans to wear a suit. I want to address idea in this thread. 🧵

FYI: one of the things publications care about a LOT is tracking which pieces convert new subscribers.
last thought on this for now: i know why people share unpaywalled versions of pieces like this, and i know it's important to have wide access to this reporting.

but this kind of writing takes a year of your life, and editing, and resources. i'm grateful to subscribers who support this work.

A birthday dessert for someone who loves plain cheesecake, by a baker who was afraid that plain wouldn’t be “good enough.” It actually was pretty great (recipe from America’s Test Kitchen). But the toppings—caramel, blueberry, orange curd, and apricot—were pretty good, too.
