1. lightning
daughter of Changó, daughter of Cuba,
temper incarnate, see how you've raised me to diminish, to hunch,
only the tallest trees are struck. daughter of lightning, you made me small, made me thunder,
with every strike i follow you. i ask, if i put down roots and grow, will you pass me over? if i join the earth, will you let me be?
you say it's all up to chance, and with your confirmation bias the odds aren't in my favor.
but the rumbling thunder has touched the ground, and i've worked hard to cultivate hidden roots.
the next time you strike the earth, i hold it, shake the ground to let you know my roots grow too deep now for you to touch.
i stretch my branches
into what was once your sky.
