1/ New report from @bentleyallan.bsky.social's Net Zero Policy Lab: As the US withdraws from green tech industries and pressures allies to follow suit, China is stepping in to power the developing world's energy transition. The scale is staggering.

The energy transition does not care about your upward revision in long-term oil demand.

Excited to be featured in @adamtooze.bsky.social’s Chartbook this week. His take: our data shows that China’s clean energy revolution goes far beyond solar deployment and exporting technology to the remaking of the world’s manufacturing base.

In the first six months of 2025 China installed more than 250GW of solar power capacity.

Jonas’ takeaway from our work on Chinese outbound FDI 🎯

11/11 At the moment when climate action is most urgent and clean energy is becoming the cheapest power source globally, the US is walking away from the ambition to lead (or participate) in that transition. China is ready to fill that vacuum.

There's a lot to be nervous about with how tumultuous things are, but there are some extremely positive things that will have huge effects in the coming decades. Energy sovereignty is one.

‼️New study from my lab: proud to share not one but two Bloomberg articles covering our new report on Chinese outbound FDI. We spent the summer painstakingly coding investment across the global south. The results are striking:

Some good stuff from @bentleyallan.bsky.social here to expand our horizons on what is possible. Core point is recognizing that target driven emissions reductions under the UNFCCC misses the need for industrial policy and finance for clean tech deployment. www.noemamag.com/the-new-geop...

Sure but it gives you a sense of the scale here—which is massive.

Another good explanation, heard on Bloomberg radio, is that it’s just the biggest construction project in the southwest, which is to the credit of the clean energy industry.

🌍 New piece: despite political blowback, thermodynamic and geopolitical forces continue to drive the energy transition.

The failure of political analysts to understand the sheer political power of the oil industry is really puzzling. It isn’t that scientists need to make better arguments it’s that the most powerful industry in history is rigging the system!

A local columnist seriously misunderstands why climate legislation fails in the California legislature — it's not that we have weak evidence or bad arguments — it's that the oil companies are major campaign funders decade after decade, which buys them real power.

Elias: California must do better to make Big Oil pay for climate change
State Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, and environmentalists couldn’t pass a bill due to lack of hard data on its impact, which next year’s effort will need.

There are two basic facts that are essential to understanding global climate policy:

1) The preferred geopolitical weapon of the modern US empire has been the imposition of energy starvation.

2) The primary strategic vulnerability of China is that they are reliant upon energy imports.

China is making massive investments in electrification to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and the US dollar.
