For the last decades she was best known for her indefatigable commitment for conservation, but her contribution to science can't be overestimated as well. I feel priviledged to have met her on several occasions. We will miss her.

Finally finished. Quorridor board made out of a single piece of oak wood (with integrated drawer for the pieces). Pretty pleased.

Who is on my desk today? A yellow perch, Perca flavescens! This guy was the perfect excuse to use my gold-green paint, which is practically neon.

The World Bank published population projections for 2025 in 1992. How far off were these forecasts? This map is great fun to ponder. High-res in source: ibb.co/W4KsSBhk

The proposed Horizon Europe successor has 2x the budget, but there's a controversial catch:

The previously civilian-only program will be opened to "dual-use" research with defense applications.

... that's, of course, if this thing passes the EU Parliament.

New from me for @science.org 🧪
Europe mulls boosting military R&D with civilian science funding
Worried about regional security, bloc pushes forward on controversial “dual-use” approach

J. D. Bernal in 1939 discussing how graduate students (only a thing from 1917 in the UK) are evaluated based on number and bulk, the publication pressure stifling originality, and filling the literature with useless papers.

Once upon a time, two science journalists had an idea for a blog about retractions. And on Aug. 3, 2010, Retraction Watch launched.

And now, 15 years and 6,700 posts later, that work seems more important than ever.

Happy 15th anniversary, Retraction Watch.

One of the challenges we faced when designing the figures for this paper (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...), was how to show representatives of many groups of fish in the phylogeny, but highlight the endothermic species such that they are emphasized and stand out for the reader.

The interesting thing is, that officials of all those governments will confirm that THEIR map is based on evidence (where the evidence is presumably coming from the same source -most likely the UMODC statistics).

"Research can be open and reproducible and still completely and obviously wrong.

Openness does not fix systemic problems in the lack of professional training and lack of professionalism in scientific research."

This post resonates with me greatly and not just for the point above.

The scientific publishing system is crooked. I got really frustrated about the waste of research money and I got really angry about the stupidity of some decision makers in academia ... but you know what? I decided to stop complaining and just buy Elsevier stocks instead.

The biggest publishers pulled profit margins in 2023 that rival Big Tech.

And they still charge you to publish and your library to read.

When are we going to start seriously thinking of alternatives to reform #PeerReview?

Where is the money going? In the case of for-profit publishers it's very clear:

Your open access fees fund corporate profit margins.

Profit margins for large academic publishers can far exceed those of household names like Amazon and Apple.
