I think the risk now is greater than that of 60s state repression. There are parallels in US history—60s/ early 70s, 1930s, 1870s, but to state the obvious 2025 is 2025.
It shouldn't escape notice that Trump explicitly threatened to use *the state* to target anyone he and MAGA scapegoat for Charlie Kirk's murder. We really could see Stephen Miller and Kash Patel use the FBI for 60s-style domestic persecution.

Some thoughts on that:

Instead of taking over the DC Metropolitan Police at a time when crime in the capital is declining and is lower than it was during Trump's first term, wouldn't it just be easier to release the Epstein files?

NEW: In the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson listed 27 grievances to prove that King George III was a tyrant. We looked at how many of those now apply to Donald Trump. Have a good Fourth of July and pass this on.

Here are the Declaration of Independence’s grievances against King George III. Many apply to Trump.
It's uncanny.

Jeffrey Goldberg's name did not appear in the Signal chat list of participants. He appears as simply as “JB.”

So who did they others think JB was, as they, clearly, did not think it was Jeffrey Goldberg?

Justin Bieber?
Joe Biden?
Joey Buttafuoco?
Jeff Bezos?
Juanita Broaddrick?
James Bond?

The institutional Democratic Party is guided by an almost pathological level of conflict avoidance in almost every direction. “What can we do to make the least number of people mad?” is just a bankrupt way to operate.

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

Bravo, Williams & Connolly.
NEW: Perkins Coie has hired Williams & Connolly to fight Trump's executive order targeting Perkins.

There had been concern in the legal community about whether major law firms would shy away from the fight out of fear of incurring Trump's wrath.

But Williams & Connolly is considered formidable.

This country has seen some bad moments in the 61 years, 5 months, 16 days I’ve been on this Earth. But it has never, ever before come close to the supertoxic level of stupidity, mendacity, narcissism, nihilism, and moral apathy that threaten to destroy it today.

Over the last nine days, the house has been out of session while the Democracy is sold for parts.

Would have been nice had the Democrat come back on their own and sued, yelled, stood up, etc. Anything but stayed home

No one's blaming Democrats for causing this crisis, but yes, many of them are failing to meet this moment.

One Democratic senator could bring the chamber to a halt. House Dems can go to fed agencies being gutted by Musk with cameras in tow. Governors can push back. State AGs can bring lawsuits.

You know, all the people who soiled their reputations working for Trump‘s first administration but aren’t working in his second have to be thinking right now, “Man, this buffoon is making us look really good by doing all the crazy shit we kept him from doing last time!”

OK, you can't have it both ways, Donald.

You can't stupidly brag about how you ended DEI to bring back safety at the FAA and then stupidly blame DEI the first time there is a crash on your watch.

In his opening speech, Speaker Mike Johnson just recited a long prayer attributed to Thomas Jefferson.
