He was liberated when the Americans arrived at the Austrian camp where he was housed in the 1940s. When he wrote the poem in 1946, he FINALLY understood that hate, silence, and complicity had been the dead wrong choice.

It's likely he was still an antisemite at the time of his arrest, but his other political views are what landed him in a concentration camp. He towed the party line, he hated the "right" people but when he did push back, he became a political prisoner and spent years in a concentration camp.

That actually happened. By the mid 1930s, Niemöller began pushing back on the nazi party. According to the Holocaust Encyclopedia, Niemöller was arrested twice as he preached against the dictatorship and their attempts to get involved in church matters.

So how did his thinking transition? What caused him to pen the "First they came for" poem in the aftermath of World War II?

The poem ends with "Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me."

Get this, Niemöller was a raging antisemite. In the 1930s, as Hitler rose to power, Niemöller was a big fan. He fell in line with the political party. He preached that Jews deserved whatever they got because they had killed Christ.
