“It’s not ‘complicated.’ “

And it’s too late.

But let the image of Ward grab hold and save what lives we still can.”

A short column for @thestar.com.

Everyone must see this photo — thousands of lives depend on it
Saying “it’s complicated” has become synonymous with “look away.”

"The president is proudly showing America and the alliance of democracies it once led that he is on the side of the world’s dictators." @radiofreetom.bsky.social and his social media handle remind us of all we're losing (though he does find a bright spot in that Kari Lake may be out of a job).
The Kremlin and other autocracies have long ached to see Voice of America and Radio Liberty destroyed, but even in their most fevered dreams, they could never have imagined that the Americans would do the dirty work themselves.

Another Gift From Trump to the World’s Dictators
Russia and China are surely thrilled by the president’s decision to close Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Marti, and Radio Free Asia.

Still mad about this. Imagine giving one of the most malign influences in the world this degree of leeway when you could just describe his obvious intent accurately.
Oh my GOD, stop quoting the wallet inspector’s business card

I’m telling you @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social, please watch this. This is the energy. Not egg prices and book tours and strongly worded letters. It’s time to take the gloves off.
Teachers teach. We need a leaderful movement, and there are leaders all around us.

This country has seen some bad moments in the 61 years, 5 months, 16 days I’ve been on this Earth. But it has never, ever before come close to the supertoxic level of stupidity, mendacity, narcissism, nihilism, and moral apathy that threaten to destroy it today.

I was one of those warning how bad it would be and how Trump 2 would be much worse than anyone complacently assumed.

But even I didn’t have ‘cancel all foreign aid, including to kids with HIV & malaria’ and also ‘let the world’s richest man get access to our private data’ on my 2025 bingo card.

"Well, Grant, we've had the devil's own day today, haven't we?"

"Yes. Lick 'em tomorrow though."

- Grant and Sherman after the disaster of the first day of Shiloh, April 1862. They won the next.

Today is one of the bad days in American history. Better days will come.

The day America decided to ignore Jared Kushner's $2 billion from the Saudis, and put an insurrection-inciting convicted felon back in the White House, is the day I stopped giving a shit about any "moral high ground."

I hope President Biden takes his "presidential immunity" out for a fucking spin.

Went downtown last night to check out Swiftieland outside Taylor's second last show in Toronto — thousands of dressed up fans, a sea of glittery clothes, boots, faces, joy. Most moving were the dads, glittered up too, gamely accompanying daughters. My dad hated the Beatles. These dads, hooray!

Full house for a showing I sponsored of The Giants, a doc about the power and beauty of old growth forests and the life of the extraordinary man, Dr. Bob Brown, who fought to save them. I hope the film is widely distributed, because everyone should see this inspiring, beautiful film.

I can’t think of a single dystopian novel or movie that imagined our government filled not with aliens but ignorant conspiracy theorists, Russian assets, sex criminals and grifters.

Wonderful to come here and leave X behind. I'm a Canadian writer and writing teacher who refuses to be discouraged by the world right now; though it looks pretty bad, it has looked bad before. The Bubonic plague! Burning witches! We are dealing with lethal sociopathic assholes. We will prevail.
