ICE Detains Legal Worker in Maine, Leaves Car Running at Scene
Portland, Maine — Masked federal agents detained a civil engineer with legal work authorization in downtown Portland on Thursday morning, leaving behind a running vehicle with a smashed window, according to witnesses and video from the scene. Juan Sebastian Carvajal-Munoz, a Colombian national employed by GEI Consultants, was stopped just after 9 a.m. near Pearl Street by agents wearing police-style vests. Bystanders said the agents broke a window of the gray Hyundai Tucson he was driving and then left the vehicle running in the street after taking him into custody. A passerby later moved the car into a nearby parking lot. The detention occurred during what Immigration and Customs Enforcement has labeled “Operation Catch of the Day,” a statewide enforcement action in Maine that ICE claims targets the “worst of the worst” criminal offenders. However, background checks reviewed by local outlets found no criminal record for Carvajal-Munoz, who colleagues say has been in the U.S. legally on a work visa. He is at least the third individual detained in Maine during the operation who reportedly lacks a criminal history. ICE has said it arrested 50 people statewide but has publicly identified only a fraction of those detainees. The agency did not immediately respond to questions about Carvajal-Munoz’s case. Colleagues described Carvajal-Munoz as a respected professional and University of Maine graduate with a strong academic and work record. Maine Gov. Janet Mills criticized the enforcement tactics, saying secretive detentions undermine public trust. Local police confirmed they responded to the scene but were told it was a federal matter beyond their authority. ICE Lets $100M Jewelry Heist Suspect Leave US Before Trial
Los Angeles, California — Federal prosecutors are scrambling after immigration authorities allowed a key suspect in what is believed to be the largest jewelry heist in U.S. history to leave the country before his criminal trial, a move legal experts describe as highly unusual and deeply troubling. Jeson Nelon Presilla Flores was one of seven defendants charged in connection with a 2022 theft in which suspects allegedly followed a Brink’s armored truck to a remote freeway rest stop north of Los Angeles and stole diamonds, emeralds, gold, rubies, and luxury watches valued by victims at more than $100 million. Flores, who pleaded not guilty, faced up to 15 years in federal prison if convicted. Despite being a lawful permanent resident and released on bail, Flores was taken into ICE custody in September while his criminal case was still pending. In December, Immigration and Customs Enforcement allowed him to pursue voluntary departure, and he was ultimately removed from the U.S. following an immigration hearing. Prosecutors later said they were unaware an immigration detainer had been placed on him. Flores’s attorney has now moved to dismiss the indictment entirely, arguing that deporting his client violated his right to a fair criminal process. Federal prosecutors oppose that request, instead asking the court to dismiss the charges without prejudice so Flores could be prosecuted if he ever returns. Former federal prosecutors said coordination failures between immigration and criminal authorities are rare in cases of this magnitude. Victims’ attorneys have also demanded answers, warning that the departure leaves them without accountability, closure, or a verdict in a major federal theft case.
