On this second Wednesday in October, it’s time for the second instalment of October Rides Month. This time, I cycle parts of two main cycle routes: one from Utrecht to Nieuwegein, and one from Utrecht to Houten. The ride was filmed in May 2025, starting around 16:15, so we can clearly see the beginning of the afternoon rush hour.

A new cycle bridge opened in De Bilt (near Utrecht, NL). Thanks to this new bridge pedestrians and cyclists do not have to use a busy car parking lot to get to a sports facility.

This week's post covers our ride across the dunes to Den Haag and Scheveningen.

I've previously described Den Haag as the most car-centric city I've been to in the Netherlands, with big roads and patchy cycling infra, but it's still far better than any city in the UK.

To underline that, I am declaring this October Rides Month. This year’s October has five Wednesdays, and on each of them I’ll share a real-time ride. Nothing spectacular—just everyday cycling on the kind of infrastructure you can find all across the country.
