Latent demand for #saferoutestoschool is real.

When planning this sidepath for middle schoolers, we could not have predicted a group of 12 independent elementary students would use it to walk to swim practice after school.

Build it and EVERYBODY will come.

Forming a mental map is a critical aspect of independent mobility for children. The club members learn this subversively as we take walking and biking adventures around town.

I love when puppies 🐶 ride transit.

This guy was living his best life on CAT 😺 bus taking in the views of the Columbia Gorge.

"Children in the community with light traffic created far more detailed maps...of their neighborhood street network that practically could have been handed to people asking for directions," Bruce Appleyard-2017.

Kids of all abilities, whether they are in a wheelchair, skateboard, rollerskate, bike or walk, should have a choice to create their own play without their parents.

That's why I do what I do.

Greetings from beautiful Bend.

We are grateful for spending our 20th annual Friendsgiving dating back to Madison life. It's pretty amazing that we all ended up in Oregon by way of MA, MO and CA.

This ADA kayak and paddle board launch in Bend's Miller's Landing is super cool and right off the major bike route.

Now I have a goal to do a float and bike shuttle this summer.

My background in fashion and bikes collided when I got to curate the Stranger Things Bike Bus costumes.

No time machine needed—we can give kids the freedom we remember: friends to roam with, and the wheels to get them there.

I was the epitome of an 80s child. My parents worked full time and it was necessary for me to transport myself and find my own play.

Stranger Things is a powerful memory tug AND a challenge in my Safe Routes to School work to give this generation the free-range childhood that I had.

Perhaps, most importantly...

"the show has tapped into a very specific type of nostalgia—leaving viewers reminiscing about a time when kids roamed their neighborhoods on bikes, by themselves" @awalkerinla.bsky.social, @curbed.com.

"1983. This is science fiction not powered by a vision of the future but a longing for the past."

Both the Bike Bus and the #80sWalkRollClub in Hood River were inspired by that longing for independence, adventure and community through biking.
