Anything that can go faster than 28 mph (or 20 mph with no pedaling) is a moped.

You cannot freeway your way to economic vitality and human connection. Larger parking lots and wider lanes will never create cleaner air. A healthier America is one where everyone is able to get to their destination without needing a car.

Every community benefits from less car dependancy.

For reasons of both legal economy and improved public understanding, we prefer (the already existing term) "moped" to (the we think unnecessary) "e-moto."
bikede.bsky.social
Unless there is some truly compelling reason to make things more complicated (adding a completely new word, and category, for things that are not electric bicycles but need - for some reason - to be distinguished from and treated differently than mopeds) "moped" is right there and ready for duty! 🫡

Lowering the cost of housing is the most important priority but lowering the cost of transportation is a pretty close second actually.
bikede.bsky.social
The 2nd best strategy to make housing more affordable is to make it as easy as possible to build more of it.

The *best* strategy to make housing more affordable is to *combine* the above with reducing the cost of transportation for households.

(Housing and transportation are deeply synergistic.)

No fewer than half of all trips in Delft are made by bike, a success replicated in cities and towns across the country. But the Dutch blueprint for urban vitality was forged on these streets decades ago, when the strategic decision was made to build a network and to build it as quickly as possible.🧵
People of all ages and abilities ride bicycles along the red asphalt cycling paths and cycling streets of Delft, which are lined with buildings, lighting fixtures, trees, plants and flowers, and bike parking. Places where we meet each other "in real life" (i.e. with all our three dimensional, physical selves not just behind a screen name) may be even more important in the Age of the Internet than they were in the past. @mattmeyerde.bsky.social t.co/ubVtBOHDfK

Idiocracy captured the idea of living in a time when genius and idiocy coexisted. But it was only a temporary coexistence.

One way of describing this is that traffic forecasting is a bit of a black art.

Another way of describing this is that traffic forecasting is bullshit.
nondriver.bsky.social
This graph says it all. Induced demand is real, and the reverse is also true: if we don't expand highway capacity, people make choices other than sitting in worsening traffic jams. $10B for transit instead, please.

"Between 2018 and 2023, six crashes involving bicyclists or pedestrians occurred within a half mile of this proposed trail corridor, including the tragic death of a bicyclist near Towanda last year"

Apparently safety and economic development is "no longer aligned with the department’s priorities"

What about in the *other* direction? Have there been any past decreases in flexibility that have letter to better outcomes?

What precedent can we point to of changes in federal government infrastructure policy that have actually produced better projects?
kenmcld.bsky.social
"What problem is this solution trying to solve?"

TLDR:
1) Want to spend more on transit? There are already no restrictions
2) States will abuse transfers to fund bad projects
3) Past increases in flexibility haven't led to better outcomes
4) This reduces accountability and transparency

When Congress comes asking for more of your hard earned money to support the transportation program, remember that they oppose accountability for how that funding is used or the results we get. @alsobrooks.senate.gov

As part of their successful campaign to get anti-stroad legislation passed in 2025 in Delaware, @bikede.bsky.social produced an excellent "Introduction to Stroads".

It would be hard to have confidence that robot cars will improve road safety if they were somehow immunized from liability so, in that specific sense, holding a robot car maker liable is encouraging. Perhaps their promise of improved safety will turn out to be real.

"Over the years, there have been hundreds of crashes involving Tesla’s partially autonomous features and dozens of fatalities. But the company has been able to avoid liability, either by settling with victims or convincing courts to dismiss the lawsuits"

Good to see liability for Tesla in this case

A lot of people want to blame DOTs for things we don't like about transportation. But DOT's are ***completely innocent** when it comes to destructive parking mandates.
