And school transportation funding is only allowed to be spent on bussing in MN.

Even the staff out directing drop off traffic aren't being paid from state ed transportation funding.

The biggest single barrier to more kids getting to school on their own is the behavior of the parents dropping their kids off individually, often doing so because it is too dangerous for the kids to get there on their own.

Even just moving parent drop off a few blocks out helps considerably.

This is just because you haven't figured out proper layering yet.

The trick is to pick a mix of moisture wicking synthetics, insulating rare earth fibers, and to be a magical creature who has never sweat or had a bad hair day in your life.

And to have a changing room at your destination.

Roadie pirates giving the full broadside will never not be disgusting.

But also the "Oh hey 20 bucks from last spring in my coat pocket" season.

Temp shift giveth, temp shift taketh away, and in the seasonal darkness it makes us huddle together like lil penguins.

Welcome to "Nose is a little drippy" bike season.

Just cold enough to fire up the nose faucet, not cold enough to kill the allergens. But you all look great in those sweaters and leaf stompin boots. 💙🚲💛

Campus Connector Trail public meeting THIS THURSDAY (Oct 9, 5-7 PM, Chester Park Commons).
Segments 4 & 5 construction planned for 2026. Come learn about the design and raise concerns about Woodland Ave crossing safety and winter maintenance.

This vital corridor deserves and currently lacks redundancy of anything nearing equally comfortable and safe infrastructure.

The backup route deserves hardened protection and sufficient driver signage.

With postings that the Greenway is closed starting October 14, it seems that the Nicollet Ave bridge over the Midtown Greenway is on its last week of life. Major progress in removal of the surrounding dirt.

Generally the trend line is less car ownership in the metro core, especially among younger residents. The reasons are complex & multifaceted.

We don't keep, collect, or maintain this data ourselves but perhaps it is something that the regional TMOs do?

Any thoughts @moveminneapolis.bsky.social ?

Shared use paths (bikes & peds sharing space w/o separation) are great for low density & low traffic areas.

Lyndale Ave S is neither of those.

It would be a HUGE mistake to put a shared use path here.

For safety & accessibility we need bus lanes, wide sidewalks & protected bikelanes.

Just like red ink on an school exam, the red numbers on a speed camera next to a school are a sign that the process 'Needs Improvement'

We were sent this video from a walk/roll to school day celebration. The road that runs alongside this school is owned + designed by the county.

The posted speed is 30mph.

Watch the red numbers consistently clock 40+mph.

That is because the design speed is far higher than posted.

Kids ❤️ getting around on their own. The desire to explore is inherent.

Bike/walk/roll to 🏫 days are beloved by families & school staff alike.

This activity could be common, but it will take a culture change at the institutions creating the barriers to that possibility.

And then after the journey to the mid-super-block crossing, you are met with a sign that makes it clear that you're not really welcome, even at a marked crossing. 🚷

Cars are the priority even in a place that is for majority non-drivers.

Now zoom out. The can you see the crossing?

What does a design like this tell you about who has priority in moving around and to this school?

Does this space invite you to exist outside of a 🚗? Is it built to human scale or something that would make sense by a corn field?

County owned roads running through urbanized areas are some of the most dangerous places for people to exist in Minnesota. It's a sad but true fact.

Road designs that make sense alongside soybeans, corn, & sugar beets do not make sense next to schools.

Case and point ⤵️

This same road has signs telling people not to cross at a marked crosswalk. Because it is unsafe because of drivers driving the speed the road was designed for by the county. Because it is designed the same way it would be if it was a remote rural road for hauling crops.

End of trip facilities matter

For a TINY fraction of the cost of car parking we could be investing in real solutions that unlock the potential of mobility equity.

People act like getting kids places without a car is Herculean. I biked three (one not mine) to the Kingfield Farmers Market, 95% on bikeways. No car seats, no stress, just laughs. The challenge isn’t moving kids, it’s redesigning cities to work for people instead of cars. #StreetsForPeople
View from the front of a cargo bike riding on a new two-way protected bikeway. Ahead, three children, all wearing helmets, ride bikes — one in a yellow sweatshirt, one in black, and one in a patterned dress. A pedestrian walks on the sidewalk to the left. Apartment buildings line one side of the street, and parked cars line the other. Trees and bright morning sunlight frame the neighborhood scene.

Consider using resources like the AARP Walk/Roll Audit toolkit to provide info to community leaders.

We're at a 40yr high for pedestrian deaths. Preventable deaths. We have the tools and resources to change that and make Minnesota a beacon of mobility equity for the rest of the country.

As we shift into Autumn, take extra care while driving - opt for other modes whenever possible, and consider using this time of year to discuss with neighbors how your street can be made safer for everyone to get around on - including little ghosts, goblins, and superheroes.

With our support, @governorwalz.mn.gov has proclaimed Oct as Pedestrian Safety Month!

Transportation planning must begin prioritizing safe designs for all. Spaces that are hostile to people powered mobility are hostile to commerce, health, & community connection.

A disproportionate # of people w/a disability depend on non-car mobility. For folks in a wheelchair, temp regulation is especially critical and challenging.

Every bus stop without a shelter in Minnesota is a policy failure.

Shade and warmth are not luxuries.
