The idea that the Republicans refusing to pay Federal workers because they didn't want to pay for health care subsidies for everyone else puts *Democrats* on the defensive is the kind of thing only DC media could believe to be true:
atrupar.com
Johnson: "It's true that in previous shutdowns, many or most furloughed employees have been paid for the time they were furloughed, but there is new legal analysis - I don't know the details, I just saw a headline - but there are some legal analysts saying that might not be appropriate or necessary"

That said…poor Democratic numbers are often driven by Democratic voters’ anger at their party not doing enough rather than rejection of what their party would do in power.

As basic question from an ex-police reporter: Can some of our journalists detail the training regimen all these new federal agents receive? The lethal incompetence involving use of force and perameters of the 4A suggests they are just handed guns, masks and badges and told to go fuck people up.

ICE is made up of men who have failed the human test and have nothing of value to offer this nation.

Adults with decency and options and possibilities don’t do this shit.

Riley used to a be very reasonable, main stream guy. Sad.

Rep. Riley Moore: "I think the actual residents of Washington DC are very happy with the outcome. And I think the actual residents of Chicago and our other great cities here in America would actually like to have safe streets and not people murdered every night."

Lawrence made at least two big boy throws on that final drive and we will forever remember it for him tripping on his dick and then weaving into the end zone like a drunk making his way out of a crowded restaurant, that’s sports, to me

The extraordinary *weirdness* of these people...

You meant “…the Trump administration continued planning to violate the law” I think.

This data is probably going to get distorted but I think the context here is much more about incumbents in primaries than enthusiasm for general elections.

CBS News poll shows the Democratic Party's favorable rating at 34%, with 66% disapproving. Again, part of the reason is weak approval with their own base — 1 in 5 Democrats view it unfavorably. That's twice the share of Republicans with an unfavorable view of their party.

Not a “tradition”…it’s the actual law.
washingtonpost.com
The U.S. Treasury shared a proposal to mint $1 Trump coins to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

But U.S. code says only deceased individuals may appear on U.S. currency, a tradition dating back to efforts to break from monarchical rule. https://wapo.st/4pWsyL3

Putin says the delivery of Tomahawks will lead to "destruction of the positive trends that were emerging" when those trends have already decisively reversed. If you needed more evidence that Russian options have almost completely evaporated, there you go...

Putin threatened Trump with severing relations if the US transfers Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.

Trump's lust for a Nobel and demand of subservience from interlocutors have become levers that Ukraine and Hamas, just to name two, have been able to use in leveraging a more favorable position from Washington. And it works because other caudillo's cannot afford to publicly bend to his will.

Tom admits elsewhere that there are fascist elements in the administration but gets hung up on the idea that until fascist consolidation is complete you can't call anything anything happening fascist. <shrug>

The regime's desire for authoritarianism is bottomless, but their capacity is not. Not even close.

They rely on bluster and memes to make up the difference. The threat is real, but less powerful than they say.

Freedom-loving Americans outnumber them by a lot. Communities can resist. Like this one:
cristianfarias.com
This video of Chicagoans intervening to save a man from being abducted off the streets by ICE is making the rounds on Instagram.

Community action works.

So much Democrat and pundit handwringing about the shutdown as if they're in charge of the government.

They're not. The only possibilities are Trump makes things worse with Democratic approval or Trump makes things worse despite Democratic resistance. Don't bail him out.

My latest (on @msnbc.com):
Opinion | Democrats shouldn’t bail out Trump as the shutdown drags on
The best time for the opposition to take a stand, rather than settle for untrustworthy promises, is right now.

Today in real sentences that belong in an Iain M Banks book:

"Iamblichus, a 2nd century Syrian novelist, may have been one of the last known people to know Babylonian."

Which would have lost decisively in any violent confrontation if the establishment had chosen to fight. So generous perhaps but accurate.

And what exactly does "neo-fascist" mean? Just fascist but recent?
billbindc.bsky.social
This hits pretty strongly as a No True Scotsman fallacy. Fascism historically is not just an intense dictatorship. The obvious counter example...Mussolini started out within the parliamentary system and in a coalition government before the system transformed into a more muscular system.
