@camillabrunet.bsky.social is a conservation-behavior #scientist interested in wildlife management, #conservation, movement and spatial #ecology. She will start her #phd studies, where she will investigate how changes in agricultural land use can influence the behavior of large mammals.

Great to have Meredith visit us today! Working with her and Ricardo Torres on the paleoecology of the fantastic #macrauchenia, according to Darwin the `strangest animal ever discovered`!

Today is #worldhabitatday!
At our Conservation Biogeography Lab at @humboldtuni.bsky.social with @tkuemmerle.bsky.social we research conservation, land-use, human-wildlife conflict of different habitats around the world - and so much more !!

Recognizing the complexity and diversity of factors shaping agents is crucial in global commodity frontier regions, where rapid land-use change drives significant social–ecological trade-offs. Considering this diversity can guide more effective, tailored interventions to promote sustainable land use.

We aim to characterize and identify the main types of land-use agents in the Argentine Chaco, a deforestation hotspot. By looking at what they have, what they do, and who they are, we move beyond the oversimplified view of “agribusiness vs. smallholders” and capture their multidimensional diversity.

- Avoiding oversimplification in land-use agents
- Structuring their diversity is key for conservation in the Argentine Dry Chaco.
Using a rich dataset of surveys and archetype analysis, we identified 5 distinct types of land-use agents, moving beyond the agribusiness vs. smallholders dichotomy!

Reminder, that this amazing paper by Melina Faingerch is out in Ecology and Society!!

This #IDAFLW, let’s not forget: healthy & sustainable diets are not only about what we eat but also about preventing food waste. 🌍

Choosing local and seasonal foods helps on both fronts by cutting emissions and reducing waste, contributing to more resilient food systems. 🍎🥦

GOOD NEWS: The ozone layer is on track for full recovery by 2050, the UN reports.

This is proof that when world leaders listen to scientists, and take swift action, we can literally HEAL our planet.

So if we fixed the ozone hole, why can't we do the same for climate change?

Our results underscore the urgent need for equitable sustainability planning to mitigate the ecological marginalization of forest-dependent communities and other vulnerable groups in the Chaco and elsewhere.

Advancing industrial cropping & ranching puts a considerable strain on forest-dependent Indigenous communities by:
1.diminishing forest area in the surrounding of Indigenous communities & affecting ecosystem functioning
2.decreasing access to remaining forest
3.limiting access to water sources.

Today is #CleanAirDay.

Clean air can prevent 8.1 million deaths each year, boost economies, slow global warming, and unlock new opportunities.

Solutions exist.
