Hello bluesky gang, I've been here for years but never actually posted- I'm a PhD student in Microbiology at the University of Birmingham, mainly looking at bacteriophage and AMR, especially in the gut microbiome!

20 min incubations plus office and lab being so far apart - in the past two weeks I've made a list of lab consumables with their product codes for ordering, and a list of all the enzymes we have kicking around…

The only benefits of the lab and office being on opposite sides of the bulding are that 1. I get my steps in when I do go from one to another and 2. I end up doing random lab chores when I have a 20 minute incubation or something rather than going back to the office…

Truly an occasion NOT TO BE MISSED!! Students, if you want a ground-breaking PhD project in top notch labs with inspiring and attentive PIs: THIS IS IT! I’d apply myself, if I were (decades) younger 😉

this may seem silly, but honestly life becomes so much nicer when you take *every opportunity you can* to celebrate, no matter how small.

There are millions of openly available microbial genomes, but searching them can be slow.

Until now 🥁

Introducing LexicMap, a new alignment tool that lets scientists search these data in minutes, helping track antibiotic resistance, trace outbreaks, and more.

How to rapidly search the world’s microbial DNA
By making the world’s microbial DNA easier to explore, LexicMap helps researchers track outbreaks, study antibiotic resistance, and understand microbial diversity.

Tfw I've had unusually long days at work so the one day I don't need to be in until 10-11 I wake up early to do crafts...

My mum is also the most ADHD person I've ever met so it's pretty clear where that came from too.

Honestly though, MMR or paracetamol didn't cause me to be autistic, having a dad who would hide from us in his office, eat the exact same breakfast every day that I could remember, and physically recoil at physical touch probably did.
biolucy.bsky.social
They do realise that if you eliminate autism you eliminate most scientists, right?

Maybe that was the plan all along.. #actuallyautistic

I’m honestly so tired of the BS around autism and ‘cause’.

I’m yet to see a single case where their motive behind ‘finding the cause of autism’ wasn’t embedded in eugenics.

If somebody goes on about finding the cause of autism, always ask why they are seeking it.

Sometimes I have to remember disability is, ya know, disabling, and slowing down is a good thing lol

Did I buy yet more cheap bubble wands today so our lab can do this?
Yes.

I worked my arse off- did a foundation year then integrated masters, 2 summer lab projects, lots of volunteering and relevant work... I basically had no life but that was more a chronic fatigue thing and prioritising work.

They made my life so much more liveable. I can actually have interests outside of work/school and not be so exhausted...
