A juvenile wader/shorebird does not travel with its parents, so how does it establish its personal annual migration itinerary?

This month, WaderTales will be ten years old.
I'm going to create a thread that highlights some of the research findings that have surprised me.
Plenty of "Wow!" & "I didn't know that!" moments.

Back in Nov-Dec 2023 I joined an expedition to look for Steppe Whimbrel and survey migrant waders. The results are now published and show what a globally important place #Mozambique is for wader conservation…

Excellent birding and nearly 1/2 the 3000km coastline unsurveyed.

It was a joy to be part this survey work back in Nov-Dec 2023. A very memorable experience…

Great the results are now published. Showing that just a small % of #Mozambique ‘s coast is globally significant wader conservation… and nearly 1/2 the 3000km coastline is essentially unsurveyed.

So sorry to learn the news of the passing of Prof. Derek Pomeroy. A huge influence for good throughout his life as an expert ornithologist in Uganda, a mentor and wonderful company too. Go well Derek... #RIPDrPomeroy

Great to find a raft of 14 Short-tailed Shearwaters loafing and feeding around shore fishing nets at Sonadia Island, Bangladesh on Global Big Day. 3rd or 4th record for the country and first not storm-blown. So confident one of them pinched part of my breakfast! #globalbigday

The analysis showed a hybrid origin of Nechisar Nightjar - a cross between a female Standard-winged Nightjar and, most likely, a male Freckled Nightjar 😮‍

Amazing story, none of which takes anything from the excellent work and analyses of its finders 3/3

Described in 1995 on the basis of a single wing of roadkill found in the Nechisar National Park, Ethiopia, in 1990, it has eluded rediscovery. Caprimulgus solala = 'one wing'.

Thom sampled the specimen as part of his PhD on Afrotopical Nightjay phylogeny.

Not sure exactly how many records of Tree Pipit there are in Bangladesh but seems quite rare, so this was a nice find near the Padma River Bridge near Dhaka last Friday (17 Jan 2025)

The one 'fixed point' in a Whimbrel's year is departure from Africa:

If a bird is delayed on migration or because of a late breeding season, there seems to be time to 'catch up':
