I understand the #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ShortBeaks? Here's a shot I really had to work for: the tiny, elusive, endemic Maui ʻalauahio. This little one usually sticks close to the tree trunks, but I got lucky :) #birds 🦉🌿📷

"I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, 'Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.'" — Lewis Carroll

I hope all of you have a peaceful holiday🤍

A very cold Winter night a few years ago for day 5 #ArtAdventCalendar ...it was somewhere in the -40 zone and I could see the ice crystals dancing in the beam of my headlamp...and they created a beautiful lunar halo and pillars from house and street lights...very frosty but so special☺️

The Wall of Light

The Flat Earthers are wrong.
At the Edge of the World, there's no sudden drop, or barrier of Ice.

There's the Wall. Pulsating, Twisting. Blinding.
Heaven help the Mortal who dares approach, for there is no return.

ʻUaʻu Kani chick!

Thanks USFWS volunteer and biologist Dan Rapp for a close up view of a younger ʻUaʻu Kani (Wedge-tailed Shearwater). See more in comments about how this chick got here!

African buffalo are one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. They can way 900 kg and are apparently considered grumpy.
I’d be grumpy too if I had to carry a bunch of yelling red-billed oxpeckers around all the time!

Of the hour I waited for the rare LeConte’s sparrow of Jamaica bay, it spent roughly 58 minutes tunneling through tall, dense grass, out of sight despite being within 15 feet.

To all of my BlueSky friends,

I don't really pitch or sell things on this platform, but I want to share this fundraiser.

I've spent some time in the Wayuu community and the people there are lovely and warm. But the children are at a severe disadvantage.

Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll). Our cam once showed nearly empty landscape; now thousands of Mōlī (Laysan albatross) returnfor breeding season with black-footed albatross (ka’upu) in the mix.
Over 1 million more albatross will soon arrive at the world’s largest albatross colony.

Enjoy this little demon, #Bugsky

At first I thought this was just a small fly, but when I got my macro on it I found this alien creature. I think it's in the genus Poppea, a type of treehopper. Found at @casabentbill.bsky.social #CostaRica #nature #insects
