That said, we have pre-printed in the past and will definitely do so again. But sometimes, it is worth remembering that many of us are just trying to stay afloat in a highly competitive environment, and that not pre-printing this or that manuscript should not be held against us.

Revisions in structural biology (my field) increasingly involve requests for cell biology/new methods not established in the lab. This takes time. From the POV of a small lab, it is reasonable to suspect that Prof. Dr. Bigshot will use additional personnel and/or try to push editors to move faster.
