If you're grasping for anything to feel good about right now - and that's a very difficult thing to find - feel good about the fact that not everyone is as much of a spineless, collaborating coward as our elites. Total strangers will risk their lives to stand next to you.

essentially, right wing reactionaries performing public action are approached with a 'perhaps we can reason them out of their positions or simply just wait them out', while anything with even a hint of a left bent gets the fucking tear gas, without hesitation.

it's just pretty plain that, at minimum, liberal governments are far more willing - and wanting - to deploy state power, state violence, against any group opposed to the status quo from the left than they are to the same from the right. one group is clearly considered more tolerable.

meanwhile, totally unarmed peaceful protests against state brutality, even - sometimes especially - under heavily liberal governments get the firm crackdown, early, hard, fast, and repeatedly. white supremacist militias can organize on facebook with no worry, food not bombs gets state monitoring.

nazis get cop escorts and their marches never get the national guard busted out on them. right wingers harassing people at abortion clinics or funerals are left untouched by state authorities.

and again, even direct action gets a soft hand or left alone. the cliven bundy standoff, for god's sake.

the former, as we know well from experience: cops, national guard. batons, guns, tear gas, using noise itself as a weapon, massive surveillance, tons of arrests. it is brutal and they don't hesitate to deploy it.

the latter? it's always "well, let's not be so hasty here." powder kept dry.

that being, simply:

what is the common response of state power under liberals to protesters against state brutality?

and

in contrast, what is the common response of state power under liberals to far right wing protests, public harassment, marches, and even direct action?

the 'liberals hate socialists more than fascists' meme gets around a lot, and it's glib, as expected as something short form, but coming from a different approach i think it can be useful to show the disparities in how liberal state power is deployed. to think systematically instead of individually.

Kestrel, uh, got better, and still shows up in Something Positive from time to time.

Unrelated to DoA, but Fun Fact #2: when the webcomic Queen of Wands ended, Something Positive had its lead character, Kestrel, show up there. And then immediately ran her over with a car. Not to be outdone, Kris Straub of Checkerboard Nightmare threw in a gag where Chex was the one driving the car.

Not sure if this has come up before, but the cat here is Miss Sakaki, Willis' real-life pet. Sadly, she passed away a little while ago.
