I keep wondering if they understand that laws just stay on the books, so have to be good for 40 years as well as 40 mins. But then I think of how many Criminal Justice Bills we've had without reflecting on whether tweaking what's illegal is the problem.

It shouldn't, but the vast majority of graduates do not go into academia and we do actually find what we learned directly useful. I'm all for learning because it's interesting (MA psychosocial studies) but if politicians start on my discipline that it _isn't_ useful, then I would disagree.

I'm obviously going to defend anthropology as a Useful Business Discipline. Learning how groups work together, how to get to the heart of something and think about patterns and trends feels like as much a part of the jigsaw of skills you need in an org as, apparently, theoretical physics(?).

I may be a minority audience as well, but there's a level of "I know how to do things in the terminal, but I don't usually compile my own programs" level of Linux user, where I'm trying my best to avoid being rm -rf'd by instructions but not a complete newb.

A thought from seeing the NHS service - the flow for HCP is all past tense "which arm did you jab", but they're filling out the form before the jab because they're doing it with patient to get details.

There are weekly, if not daily, criminal offences occurring at every pelican and zebra crossing I use around me, more dangerous (and indeed, occasionally terrifying) than holding a placard, and yet I never see a police presence at any of them
"Mahmood rejects suggestion police should just ignore people holding placards saying they support Palestine Action
Mahmood says she has “no truck” with the argument that people should not be arrested for holding up signs saying they support Palestine Action (a proscribed group – which means just holding a sign in public saying you support them is an offence). She says:
"I have no truck with this argument that suggests that merely holding up a placard somewhere in central London somehow shouldn’t have a police response.

If you’re supporting a proscribed organisation, you are breaking the law of our land.

That organisation has been prescribed. It is an offence to show support for that organisation.

People might not like that decision. They might have questions about the way that the anti-terror laws work in this country. But there is no excuse for holding up placards supporting a banned organisation. That will always be met with a police response.""

Absolutely INSANE use of passive voice in this CNN piece

just incredible

@katmabu.bsky.social “landed on the ground” during the protest???
At least one other person, who identified herself on social media as Kat Abughazaleh, a former journalist also running for Congress, landed on the ground during that same protest after she was pushed by a federal law enforcement agent in a camouflage uniform wearing a full face covering, sunglasses and a helmet, video by CNN affiliate WBBM showed.

hot take: the social norm that "cool" people don’t talk about their jobs is bad for labour organizing because it perpetuates the idea that our work selves are severed from and unrelated to our true selves and it prevents the deepening of community relationships around labour
