Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt is a really fabulous contemporary fiction novel that I was skeptical about at first and then I completely fell in love with it. There is a very smart octopus who, hear me out, is a hero.

Even Though I Knew the End by C.L. Polk is technically a novella, taking place in a midcentury setting, and is a little bit magical and a lot lovely.

The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden is deeply emotional and beautiful, and takes place slightly after WWII

Monk & Robot (A Psalm for the Wild-Built and A Prayer for the Crown-Shy) by Becky Chambers is speculative science fiction showing a future that is WAY more reassuring than we might assume based on the current trajectory of technology (I've only read Psalm so far, caveat).

Anything by India Holton - she has two Victorian-era series that feature adventures women (with a sprinkling of magic and a good dose of humor) and the men who simp over them, and the Dangerous Damsels series was THE thing that got me back into reading.

The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by S. A. Chakraborty is more fantasy than historical but it is just literally so fun start to finish

I think it's akin to the excitement I get if I buy a powerball ticket and I am Shrodinger's Lottery Winner. But I don't dare to hope, because I hate the letdown.
