Chatbots and AI slop are going to ruin countless brains. Yours doesn't have to be one of them. Study history. Read poetry. Get acquainted with Bach, Shakespeare, George Eliot. In a time when people are rapidly getting dumber, we need communities devoted to the life of the mind.

This is brilliant. I tend to put things into SF metaphors & now I see the trolley prob. as another parallel with Omelas, The Cold Equations & indeed, Kobayashi Maru. All of which I think tell us to go and rewrite the story/ world because we lose if we even allow these scenarios to arise. Thank you.

labour/democrats/whoever are not losing because they’re discussing supporting trans people. they’re losing because they agreed, by engaging in the argument at all, with the premise that some minority groups can be blamed for social problems.

it’s only ever going to be a question of who is blamed.

feels like yet again time to mention that the *videogames* industry (that's a creative industry, which people do creative degrees in) brings in more than twice the amount to the British economy as the fishing and steel industries *combined*

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Just finished The Winter Job and preparing to review. But really, it’s so ridiculously good, what do I say? Getting distinct Ealing Comedy vibes.

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a young man possessed of a wife must be in need of a flitch of bacon.

The origin of presenting a flitch of bacon to any man who can swear that for a year and a day he never has had a quarrel with his wife, nor wished himself unmarried since his wedding-day, dates back to the year 1211.
