I think the stock market wants a full apology from Trump, not one of those "i'm sorry if anyone was hurt" backtracks. That is, it wants all the tariffs suspended.

Death by a thousand paper cuts
REPORTER: The EU has said they offered zero for zero tariffs on cars and industrial goods. Is that not enough?

So much of the US Constitution is designed to keep an autocrat from amassing too much power. At this moment, the constitution is failing. Or perhaps our elected representatives are failing the constitution. When a single person can wreck the economy by fiat, something is badly broken.

Here’s the bidding:
Pres Trump slapped 20% tariffs on China.

He then made up tariffs China charges the US.

He then charged them half of that at 34%.

China retaliated, meeting the US number.

Now Trump threatens 50% new tariffs in response to retaliation to a made up number. Or 104% tariffs.

BlueSky stays undefeated. I love this place.
My mentions on Bluesky are running hotter than they ever did on Twitter. Sorry, that I can't keep up in real time.

It's darkly funny that from the perspective of investors, a circuit breaker (not the literal ones on the exchange, but rather some sort of offramp) to stabilize the market seems more elusive than when we were facing a literal global pandemic.
