Abandoned home during Spring melt, north of Wallace, Idaho, April '08.
This pretty creek was badly polluted from lead and silver mining upstream from the 1890s through the 20th century, which may have led to the abandonment of this idyllic place.

Going thru some old photos, this one from somewhere south of Spokane. There is a note -
"She passed away back in the 60s, nobody's come around the place in years. Rafters are full of bats now. See the owl nest up there? She's watching us. - D. Lindquist, Nov. '07 ".

Just before the cold temperatures fell on us I came across the last dragonfly of Autumn munching on the last ladybug of Summer.
I hadn't seen a brown one before and I nearly stepped on it, the camo is so good.

The scenery at the base of my big alder tree.
I think I used to know the name of the little plants with the brilliant red berries, but it escapes me.

Probably not the most astonishing autumn foliage photo that you will see, but here is an old licorice fern frond with moss beginning to grow on its spent sori, the seed dots.

There has been a duck nest just behind this old stump in the pond, overgrown with various brush. The November rains have raised the water level to now cover the nest and the ducks have moved on. But I feel sure they'll be back to rebuild their pretty home.

In the PDO negative phase cooler water appears in the NE Pacific while warmer water appears in the NW. But the cooler waters that appear in the NE are warmer than they once were, and the warmer waters in the NW are also warmer than they once were, for an overall increase.
My humble understanding.

A rare forest sea lion. Seen a few miles up the Chehalis river from Aberdeen, Wa. King tides, high winds, and flooding rains seem to have brought him inland.

In Autumn the water level in the pond is very low and the water lilies are falling back for the season. This Great Blue Heron finds the hunting easy in this shallow water and here is swallowing a frog.
