5. I don't know that US will ever be a stable place for science again. I know that sounds nihilistic but the 50% of the country that voted for Trump is not going anywhere and they appear to be ok with blowing up the entire research infrastructure for shits and giggles.

When I was in TX, you could get your kid into the public school gifted program by having a third-party analysis of your child's intelligence. It created an entire industry of pay-to-play for gifted program admission.

This is the thing they'll never understand about "wokeness" or "political correctness" - huge organizations didn't implement these policies because of "cancel culture" or secret communists, they did it to stay competitive and viable. It's what people wanted

I think the R01 is basically a non-starter at NIGMS now. Data from NIH Reporter for new and competing awards, comparing number of R01s issued relative to R35s (MIRA). This has major ramifications for basic science and basic science investigators that are not yet in the MIRA pool
Graph showing total R35+R01 awards issued by NIGMS from 2020 to 2025. R01 in black showing a steep decline. R35 showing an increase. Total awards in 2025 slightly up from 2024 but these years are lower than 2020-2023

"A literature which is made by machines, which are owned by corporations, which are run by sociopaths, can only be a “stereotype” — a simplification, a facsimile, an insult, a fake — of real literature. It should be smashed, and can." -- @nplusonemag.com 🙏🏽

In 2024, there were about 17,616 new projects awarded by the NIH. In 2025, this number was 11,190 (my number includes things like supplements). That is an ~37% cut in funding of new projects by the NIH.

Here are the data by institute and center.

All amount in millions of dollars.

3/3
A table of funding by NIH institute and center for fiscal years 2024 and 2025. Most institutes and centers have committed the same level of dollars in fiscal year 2025 as in fiscal year 2024 with NHGRI and NHLBI being farthest behind.

Each R35 award funds one and only one laboratory. Meaning that as many as 36 research groups across the country may shut down due to grants not funded by a single institute, over *just* the period from September 7 to approximately September 16 (any later funding actions are not yet in the database).

“Solved a self imposed crisis meant to harm science with a solution that also harms science, just not quite as much” is a bit unwieldy for a headline.

Sorry, Alex. My last R01 also ended in the spring. I'm surviving with undergraduates and an indirect account for consumables.

Apple's approach to protein structure is great for accessibility - & potentially biological realism - reasons.

Eg, prediction could be achieved w/ smaller compute & the generative nature of prediction allows for multiple conformations

Since there is some discussion that NIH institutes should not simply use paylines to determine which grants to fund, I thought I would share some old data.

These are plots of funding probability fas a function of percentile score for 9 institutes.

1/7
Graphs of funding curves for nine NIH institutes from fiscal year 2012.
