Thanks to @uwenvironment.bsky.social news team for resurfacing this interview from a couple years ago.

Helpful and still very relevant context RE trends (and drivers of trends) in wildfires, especially given much of the broader dialogue around fires so far this summer across the n. hemisphere.

Great visit to UCSB & an honor to present in the EEMB seminar series. Was fun to talk forests, fire, & resilience w/ many awesome faculty, graduate students & undergrads.
🌲🔥
Thanks to Anderegg Lab for hosting me, esp Joe Celebrezze. Was fun to be back at my UG alma mater.

climate change has substantially increased the frequency and severity of such “disaster weather”"
dx.doi.org/10.1126/science.adr5127
Points show the percentage of days (FWI and VPD) and months (PDSI) in each year at the disaster locations that exceeded the 97.5th percentile value (which corresponds to mean FWI max during the disasters). calculated over all days from 1980 to 2023. The blue line shows the fit of a generalized additive model.

Climate change increasingly alters the interactions between forest disturbances. Here we present a framework for quantifying dist. interactions and compile evidence for their impacts. Led by @dudney-joan.bsky.social with @brian-j-harvey.bsky.social & @julieedtree.bsky.social doi.org/10.1146/annu...

New paper: The role of fire on Earth
doi.org/10.1093/bios... BioScience @aibsbiology.bsky.social
Fire affects all major components of the Earth system: atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, anthroposphere, & biosphere. Fire is an intrinsic factor on our planet.

Protected areas safeguard old-growth forests against human land use, but not against the impacts of anthropogenic climate change. Here we show that a climate-mediated increase in disturbances could cause a decline in old-growth forests in a national park in C Europe. doi.org/10.1088/1748...

🔥 Our new research in @science.org shows that people are increasingly exposed to fires globally, driven by overlapping shifts in where #fires occur and where people live.

But changes in exposure vary hugely by region and are shaped by different population dynamics.👇

Increasing global human exposure to wildland fires despite declining burned area
Although half of Earth’s population resides in the wildland-urban interface, human exposure to wildland fires remains unquantified. We show that the population directly exposed to wildland fires incre...

Important new paper by Luke Collins and colleagues: "Extremely large fires shape fire severity patterns across the diverse forests of British Columbia [BC], Canada"

Key findings:
1. Fires in BC have increased in size from 1986-2021
2. Bigger fires have larger patches of high-severity fire

Extremely large fires shape fire severity patterns across the diverse forests of British Columbia, Canada
Warming and drying conditions are driving increases in wildfire size and annual area burned across the forests of British Columbia, Canada. The impact of increasing fire activity on these forests rem...
