In libraries, we call this vocational awe. The idea that if you are invested in your calling, you should accept low wages/inhumane conditions is a nasty little trick of capitalism.

The "Starving artist" trope was started by ppl who didn't wanna pay artists (writers, painters, musicians, etc) & wanted it to seem a good thing. Artists suffering for art, starving artists, doing it for love only/shunning money - All myth turned folklore as reason to NOT FUCKING PAY US OUR DUE.

Of course she doesn't know it, but I read an interview of @jamilahlemieux.bsky.social years ago on Twitter, and it helped me solidify my philosophy. I won't ever forget: "Blackness is good enough for me." it was like a light lug going off in my head. ❤️❤️❤️

I also dropped #BrocadeOdyssey, despite my admiration for Tan Songyun.
But #FlourishedPeony (with Yang Zi & Li Xian) is everything I hoped Brocade to be. It’s such a beautifully made show - painful and beautiful & warm in the right way. Yang Zi & Li Xian are so good together!

I just finished reading the #FlourishedPeony source novel (translated, obviously). While it was a good read, I'm far more enamored with the drama. Congratulations to the writers on creating a whole new story while sticking to the essence of the original.

I feel this too, always. Some days less glad than others, other days ladder than others, but there is always that underlying joy.
Despite everything that comes with it, I couldn’t imagine being anything other than a Black woman. I’m so glad it’s a life I was chosen to live.
