The newly released Python 3.14 seems perfectly suited for use on a Raspberry Pi.

@gray17
I guess the GRE probably scares some people, but I took the general GRE about 20 years ago, and I didn't find it scary at all. In fact I thought it was quite easy, not really any harder than the SAT, and I scored very high.
On the other hand, I tried several of the GRE subject area […]

@brouhaha How about a costume form of the GRE or similar exam?

A NAS with multiple shared volumes isn't like a reservoir, it's like a series of tubs.

A friend said that for Halloween, I should get a costume of the scariest thing I can think of. But I don't want anyone to think that I'm an ICE agent. Even if it didn't get me killed, I wouldn't be welcome at any restaurants or Halloween parties.

Ugh. From now on when I read "LLM," I'm gonna interpret that to mean "Lame-ass Lying Machine."

It's as stupid a term as "AI," which will all know means "Automated Idiot."

30 years ago, Bob Morris, then a senior scientist at NSA, gave a keynote talk at the CRYPTO conference (the leading conference for academic cryptographers).

He opened by telling us he would reveal the NSA's first rule for cryptanalysis (which certainly got our attention). "First", he said […]

@brouhaha I used to use it as a lighting controller. Wrote some Python to present a bunch of coloured squares, tap one, lights go that colour.

I need to clearly mark the modular jacks on the two boxes as NOT being Ethernet, and add clamp diodes to protect the RS422 drivers and receivers from some idiot (e.g. me) accidentally hooking it up to Ethernet, or worse yet, a POTS line.

I need to spend some time learning how to use the Pico's PIO controllers. I considered using the PIO in the RP1 chip of the Pi 5, but I need other stuff in hard real time as well, and using the Cortex-M in the RP1 is unfortunately not supported.

The Pico is so inexpensive that it's not really […]

I'll design a small "hat" for the regular Pi, and a similar small board for use with the Pico, to convert the 3.3V CMOS SPI to/from RS422 differential over common 4-pair CAT5 cable.
The regular PI will be the SPI initiator, and the Pico will be the SPI target.

For the production line stations, I implemented the applications in Python 3, using Qt. I really like Qt, and the Python bindings are really easy to use. I expect to do the same for my own embedded project consoles.
The real-time stuff will actually be on Raspberry Pi Pico 2 (RP2350) […]

The higher resolution of the Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2, now 1280*720 vs 800*480 of the original, is a big improvement.

I expect it will be quite a while before there's a Touch Display 3, but when they do it, maybe they can make it with about the same physical outline dimensions, but less […]

I've used SmartiPi cases (from SnatiCase) for the older Raspberry Pi models and the original Raspberry Pi Touch Display before, for control and monitoring stations on a production line, and liked them.
I just got a SmartiPi Touch Pro 3 case, which supports the Raspberry Pi 3, 4, or 5, with the […]

I'm disappointed that GCC 15.x didn't make it into Debian Trixie.
Sigh.
No matter when a distro is released, there are always some "I wish it had <x>" things, but at some point you have to shoot the developers and ship the product.

For a while now I've thought schools should have posters with sort of a game-style tech tree showing how math and science topics stack to enable working in various things. "To do tilt-compensated compass modules you need trig, and x, and y, and z etc, etc, etc"

Won't work for […]

@brouhaha Simple uses of trigonometry, how tall is this building based on its shadow. How big a ladder do I need to reach the roof safely etc.
most maths professors fail at providing simple examples and in my case unless I see a practical use I have a hard time learning stuff.
