@corajungbluth.bsky.social: Ambition is there, urgency too, but unity is missing. Without collective action, the EU risks being squeezed between Trump’s US and Xi’s China. De-risking and boosting competitiveness are key to Europe’s reducing blackmail susceptibility.

@etiennehoera.d-64.social: EU boasts the “best deal” with the US - and promises other partners fairness. if the EU fails to address this tension in trade policy – between being the best trading partner & getting the best deal – it will be far less attractive internationally than it could be.

@cdgeiser.bsky.social: Simplifying EU rules is vital, but not enough. Market fragmentation costs firms dearly. The roadmap to 2028 targets barriers in capital, services, energy. Member States must finally act beyond national interests.

@martinhullin.bsky.social: Tech sovereignty took center stage. New rules, funds, and regulation show awareness, but lack a coherent strategy. Without a EU tech stack and a clear focus on the EU's edge in digital tech, piecemeal initiatives won’t secure independence from the US.

Malte Zabel: Von der Leyen struck a grave tone, urging unity, listing successes, and announcing new initiatives. Yet in economic policy, she mostly recycled old ideas, despite it being a main priority of the last year. Without real reform, rhetoric risks outrunning delivery.

Some thoughts on trade in #SOTEU:
Aftermath of the EU-US trade deal is the biggest theme (also keeping in mind upcoming votes). VDL: EU got the 'best deal', better than 'competitors' (JP, KOR, UK?). Alternative would have been trade war 'chaos'.
