@hanifkawousi.bsky.social, PhD student in the ECOBUDGETS project, spent this summer registering (plant)biodiversity and carbon storage in #Bergen. How that looked? What is he finding? Read about it here!

Our own Vigdis Vandvik will be Coordinating Lead Author on the upcoming seventh #IPCC report, co-leading the chapter on climate change, #biodiversity, #ecosystems and ecosystem services on land and in freshwater. A big, challenging, and very exciting task! @vvandvik.bsky.social

The great advantage of having QGIS take care of creating randomly distributed sites for fieldwork. don’t think I could have picked a better spot myself to investigate the crossover from human made construction and nature! #Ecobudgets @uibcet.bsky.social @btwnthefjords-uib.bsky.social
In the perfect cross section between anthropogenic constructions and nature, we mapped the vegetation. One of the more unique compositions of species so far in #Ecobudgets.

First round of germination recordings, and @nadi-mi-ar.bsky.social & MSc Silje Steine @btwnthefjords-uib.bsky.social and I were thrilled (& a bit relieved) to find hundreds of seedlings. Out experiment works! #ITEX #ProudSupervisor #ProfLife #PhDLife 🍃🏔️🌐🌍🪏📏🧪

The #DURIN #fieldseson is ramping up - we are collecting plant growth, biodiversity, biomass, soil, and thermal tolerance data from #dwarfshrubs across gradients to understand their responses and ecosystem roles under a changing #climate. @btwnthefjords-uib.bsky.social @unibergen.bsky.social 🍃🏔️🌐🧪🪏📏
Two scientists in heavy-duty raingear, smiling, sitting amongst blueberry plants with a lot of sampling gear and data sheets. Fieldwork! A person looking up at us over some blueberry bushes - smiling, wearing a moskito net A student analysing a vegetation plot for bryophyte biodiversity. Surrounded by forest. His pro tip: laminated cards with samples of the most common species and their characteristic traits to help him keep on top of the ID-ing during long and sometimes wet field days. Two scientists in the lab preparing samples fir thermal tolerance measurements.

#phd thesis at @unibergen.bsky.social have to include a table with co authors of included articles, contributions and affiliations.
Here is a @github.com template to do this in #quarto, using the Plume R package and multibib filter.

New project! @btwnthefjords-uib.bsky.social to map biodiversity and ecosystems in #Bergen. Very first randomly located plot in Hanif Kawousi’s #PhD is in Nygårdsparken! @uibcet.bsky.social @cesam-uib.bsky.social @unibergen.bsky.social #EcoBudgets #DarkDiv #ProudSupervisor #ProfLife #PhDLife 🍃🏔️🌐🌍🪏📏🧪
#Fieldworkselfie - four scientists and a vegetation plot, demarcated by a mental frame. This plot is part of a random sample of 200 sick plots in Bergen Municipality. And this particular one ended up on a roadside in Nygårdsparken! First day of field work! PhD student Hanif Kawousi starting his field work by sampliing a vegetation plot in an urban park. In this picture he is standing, smiling, with a tablet and weseing a yellow rainjacket and a blue hat. In the background, a water fountain… that’s urban ecology for you! PhD student Hanif Kawousi and lab manager Dagmar Egelkraut eagerly messuring traits of plants …. sitting on a lawn in a park roadside curb,… PhD student Hanif Kawousi talking to a passer-by on a paved park path. When doing urban ecology, remember to factir in some time talking to strangers :-) …for this plot alone, we had 8 people ask questions… #outreach

Update! @nadi-mi-ar.bsky.social & MSc Silje Steine @btwnthefjords-uib.bsky.social have now set up plots & OTCs, prepared and sowed seeds of 8 lowland species into the alpine, with/without warming & neighbours. Excited to see results over the summer!! #ITEX #ProudSupervisor #ProfLife #PhDLife 🍃🏔️🌐🌍🪏📏🧪
Open top chambers (OTCs) are small glasshouses without roofs that are extensively used in climate change research to warm Arctic and alpine vegetation to experimentally assess climate change impacts. In this picture we see a bunch of them newly set up in a mountain grassland An Open Top Chamber (OTC( in a grassland, seen from above, with some plots inside. The plots are 50% vegetarion, 50% bare soil.

OTCs are small glasshouses without roofs that are extensively used in climate change research to warm Arctic and alpine vegetation to experimentally Assessment climate change impacts. Msc student Silje Steine has her ducks in a row! 😉. She is sitting at a table sorting many many little bags into neat stacks, in a candle-lit mountain cabin. The bags contain seeds to be sown as part of a field experiment. MSc Student Silje Steine sitting in a meadow, bent over a vegetation plot, sowing some seeds. Lots of bags, equipment, recording sheets in the foreground.
