Why Harrell keeps getting away with lying on the debate is really something else.

Question about Harrell hiring Adrian Diaz and allegations that he runs a "boys' club." He says no mayor in history has had to terminate a police chief but him and that he didn't hire Diaz, he was "handed to" him. In fact, Harrell encouraged Diaz to apply and hired him.

Another bizarre gotcha for Wilson: Are you planning to hire Joe Mallahan, Lorena Gonzalez, and Tammy Morales as deputy mayors? She looks at him like he has an extra head and says no, I'm definitely not gonna answer that.

Missed this while typing: Harrell told the crowd, which was not giggling, "You can giggle if you want, but 18% of Americans are homeless." This is not true.

When Harrell supports a plan that requires changing the state tax code, it’s fine. When Wilson proposes a plan that requires changing the state tax code, it’s impossible.
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
Harrell talks about the B&O tax proposal and some other programs that help small businesses, and notes his support for exempting ALL grocery stores of any size from all state B&O taxes.
"We're not flippin' up pizza and making fun of it!"

Daniels wants to know if the high cost of pizza in Seattle isn't because of the minimum wage increase Wilson worked for. She corrects him (she ran campaigns for minimum wages outside Seattle) and notes that the point of that video is that high housing costs contribute to high labor costs.

Wilson says she'll bring in passionate, competent people with deep experience. "Maybe you'll even see a couple people from Mayor Harold's office, I don't know." Harrell pretty stony-faced at that one.

Balter asks the crowd, which clapped and snapped when Wilson noted that his campaign is being funded by big corporations, to be quiet—for the second time. Lots of side-eye at that.

Wilson says she supports the business and occupation tax Harrell and City Councilmember Alexis Rinck proposed, noting that it's one of the options that the progressive revenue task force she helped lead came up with as possibilities.

downtown is not jn the comp plan we haven't even see what proposed changes are. oops.
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
"We're reinventing downtown" with "experiential activity" like "music, dog parks, day care, art, buskers, culture." Plus housing on top of the Triple Door. The new comp plan "cuts through red tape" to improve downtown, he says. (They haven't passed that part?)

Although we disagree with the conclusions from SDOT's traffic study, its traffic counts were very eye-opening:
• Over 3 times as many people use Denny Way to access areas east of I-5 than to access I-5 S
• Of the people continuing east, 35% do so in a car, 34% in a Route 8 bus, and 31% on foot

SDOT has updated their post about Denny Way bus lanes and have uploaded the full traffic study, which you can read below.

In short, it's a 516 page document that does not mention mode shift or alternate routing a single time.

Seattle hasn't built a new public library in twenty years. It would be great to see the city thinking about this when it comes to redeveloping properties like the Mercer Garage.

Cities are developing a new approach to developing housing: Integrating it into mixed-use library projects. These investments improve neighborhood vitality, add housing & improve services.

In new research @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, I create a database of such projects & point to success stories ⏬
Aging Libraries Could Offer Cities a Unique Opportunity to Build New Housing While Improving Public Services
Since 2000, more than 1,800 apartment units have been built in combined library-housing developments. These projects not only address local housing needs but…

That must’ve been in the @nwprogressive.org pre-primary polling because that’s the only public head-to-head I’ve seen. I’d believe it though!

It’s bizarre! Voters are like “things are looking up, despite the fact that our leaders have completely failed us!”

Sorry urbanism nerds but even though YIMBY is ascendant, transportation issues are just not really a priority. I think Harrell’s election year push on paving and graffiti, the two rock bottom issues here, isn’t winning him many votes.

Some very interesting results in this Seattle Chamber of Commerce poll.

1) Homelessness and public safety are still top issues but both are declining in salience and affordability has caught up with public safety.

6) Despite all this, Seattleites love Seattle and aren’t afraid to show it. This must frustrate the Harrell campaign to no end!

4) On growth, big majorities are pro-growth and want to see faster progress on development.

5) On CCTV, voters are split. In the appendix it’s clear that seniors are all in while younger voters, especially millennials, really hate it. No clear divides in race.
