Hence some of the pitfalls of writing on the Internet, highly visible in e-mail, blogs, and responses to blogs. The mechanical ease and immediacy of electronic communication are deceptive. People write hurriedly, don't reread what they wrote, misread and are misread, get into quarrels, hurl insults, and use flame-throwers because they expect their writing to be understood as if they were talking. It's childish to assume people will understand unexpressed meanings. It's dangerous to confuse self-expression with communication.

Animals with misleading names. I'm seeing this go around as part of a viral tumblr thread so I thought I'd reshare it.
A comic called Animals with Misleading Names. There's an electric eel labeled "not an eel". There's a mountain goat labeled "not a goat." There's a maned wolf labeled "not a wolf." There's a king cobra labeled "not a cobra. Also, snakes are typically self-governing." There's a peacock mantis shrimp labeled "Not a peacock. Not a mantis. Also, not a shrimp." There's a horny toad labeled "Not a toad. Only thinks of you as a friend." There's a mayfly labeled "active through the spring and summer." There's an eastern kingbird labeled "found in the west. Many birds do not recognize its authority."

Rob Reiner described Norman Lear as his second father.
"The Lear Family is devastated by the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner. Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world. Norman would have wanted to remind us that Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place, and they pursued that through their art, their activism, their philanthropy, and their love for family and friends. Lyn Lear had remained very close with them and said, "The world is unmistakably darker tonight, and we are left bereft." From Norman Lear's book, "Even This | Get to Experience" published in 2014. "To be alone with Rob Reiner is to be in a crowd. His brain and his mouth, like a chain of Chinese firecrackers, are firing constantly. If that sounds like I'm describing a pain in the ass, nothing could be further from the truth. Rob was like that when I fell in love with him as a nine-year-old teaching my daughter Ellen to play jacks. This one was fun: it's about (legally distinct versions of) Buffy Summers and Antia Blake in their middle age, starting a bookstore with an elderly Harry Dresden. (And fighting the forces of evil.) 📚
