some thoughts on catharsis
![Most violent language is catharsis, not catalyst. People say "pedos get the woodchipper" to find the emotional discharge they fantasize would come of a level of action they know they're incapable of. On the Left, slogans of impotence include "Eat the rich" and "Kill [all men/landlords/your local rapist]". Their only catalytic promise is to create a rhetorical environment that prompts a bolder person to "do the thing". But this is not why we say them. Instead, as with sports, saying the slogan lets us identify with the slogan's rare doer. Cathartic speech promises morality from the sidelines. At its worst, cathartic speech functions to excuse us from actions within our reach. The right winger says "pedos get the woodchipper" to assure himself that the pedo is someone he can imagine being fed into a woodchipper-in other words, someone he doesn't know. Vigilante pedo hunter videos assure him that child safety asks no effort of him beyond his disgust. The problem with justice porn isn't that it dehumanizes its targets; but that its sole purpose for doing so is the catharsis of the spectator.
