Re: Mark Elias’ piece below. I understand what he is expressing, but also see it as incomplete. We ARE the institutions. They have been empowered only by “We the People.” Our Democracy has always been “just us.” It lives within us and through us.

That “our institutions won’t save us” — and that “we are on our own” — mustn’t mean that those of us who have some experience with and expertise at using our institutions on behalf of others can just hang back and tend to our own gardens. We have a sacred duty to do all we can to help save others.
Each time I have sat down to write something since the election, I am bothered by this recurring phrase that I simply cannot get out of my head.
So,I am going to just say it out loud: we are on our own.
