Canon for Vocations, Episcopal Diocese of Alabama. My church job is to think about church jobs.

Writer. Reader. Cajun/creole food eater. Find me at theparochialreport.substack.com.
Inspired by something @scottagunn.bsky.social posted this summer, I finally finished writing this piece about why vitality in the #Episcopal Church might lie in living more fully into the wisdom of our canons, not less: open.substack.com/pub/theparoc...
All Are Called: Our Canons Are Clear, But Are We?
What would it look like for the Episcopal Church to live more fully into its own canons around vocational discernment? Is it even possible?

Our 4 yr old started school last week at the cathedral school across from the diocesan offices. Today was their first chapel— basically a choral Morning Prayer service— and it was so lovely. What a great way to punctuate the week.

Been writing a lot on Substack this summer, but haven’t actually published much.

I’m making it a personal goal to change that this week!

I'm afraid (and rather disappointed) that I'm going to have to keep posting this, but just a reminder that cruelty is *always* a choice.

Oh gosh I had temporarily forgotten about this. Hosting the World Cup while we are alienating the whole world will be… interesting.
lol we’re really gonna host the World Cup next year
AP: Preliminary figures released Tuesday show visits to the U.S. from overseas fell 11.6% last month compared w/ the prev year.

Tourism was projected to rise by 9%, but is now anticipated to fall by roughly that same amount.

Bookings for US travel at a top Canadian site are down 40%.

This is just insane
Aren't you tired of how central money is to our democracy?

To give a sense of out-of-kilter we are, a single state court race saw significantly more spending than the entire United Kingdom national election.

Thanks John Roberts!

I mean this is the thing, isn't it? So many folks were already under the impression things were on fire (remember how many folks thought we were in a recession?) that the perspective of our reality is skewed in ways that change how the current administration's actions are understood.
The WSJ talked with Trump voters who see declines in their retirement accounts, but dismiss it in part because they believed the economy was bad before. One “said he wouldn’t be concerned even if the market continued to tumble through the summer.”

Man. Francis Collins is a person of deep faith and integrity. Would have loved for him to go out under better circumstances, celebrated in the way he deserves.

IT’S RACE DAY 🏁
Something I’m personally excited about: @indycar.com returns this weekend at St. Pete! New season, new broadcast partner, and the great @willbuxton.bsky.social in the booth. Can’t wait for Sunday’s race.

Spent the last few days in Kansas City with hundreds of other Episcopalians for the Episcopal Parish Network conference, and even had the privilege of helping lead one of the workshops. It was a time of reunion, inspiration, and renewal— a much-needed dose of hope!

It also seems I should add “publicly funded medical research,” “our allies,” and “democracy” to the list of things I want to state emphatically I believe are good and “siding with/ceding power to our enemies” to the list of things that are bad. Sheesh.
So for my first post here I want to state emphatically that empathy is good, nazi salutes are bad, and that kindness, compassion, and mercy are *always* options. Cruelty is always a choice.

"The NIH... supported 99 percent of the drugs approved in the U.S. from 2010 to 2019. The agency has had a hand in “nearly all of our major medical breakthroughs over the past several decades,”

The NIH is in a struggle for its (and our) lives. This is existential to America:
