As Yom Kippur draws to a close, many of our Jewish friends and neighbours will be turning their phones on to the news of the antisemitic attack in Manchester.

We condemn this terrible act, and send our solidarity and love to all members of our Jewish community in Cambridge and across the UK.

Lovely to attend the Cambridge Street Pastors AGM at St Andrew's Church last night and hear about the fantastic work that they do to keep people safe at night in the city centre.

It was lovely to attend the official opening of the Cherry Hinton Hub this morning - it's taken a fantastic effort by so many in the local community over so many years to get this off the ground, and I'm proud that the City Council has put £1.6m behind this great community project.

Local government is being reorganised, giving us a chance to simplify governance structures in our area. We think a unitary council covering Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire is the best option for local residents - here's why:

Cambridge is joining up habitats across 9,200 hectares – from meadows to fens – to help nature bounce back.

Great to hear from and meet other council leaders and officers from other small cities, and to make the case for how simplified governance arrangements for Cambridge could help us to contribute to the national economy, tackle poverty and inequality, and protect and enhance our natural environment.

Visit to Parliament today representing @camcitco.bsky.social on a panel discussing 'A Case for Cities in Local Government Reorganisation and Devolution'.

With racist and far-right sentiment on the rise, it's more important than ever to stand up for migrants. At Cambridge City Council, we are proud to be a City of Sanctuary and to work to support and empower all our residents, no matter who they are or where they were born.

I was glad to contribute a very small amount to the project, by attending sessions with ESOL students at Cambridge Regional College, to hear about their lives and the challenges they face in finding suitable housing, and to offer help where we could.

Navigating the Cambridge rental market is hard, and far more so if you're newly arrived in the UK or English isn't your first language. This book reports on a project by @pomocorguk.bsky.social to understand the experiences of migrants trying to find a home in Cambridge.

Farage said today he would said women refugees back to the Taliban.

What a grotesque loss of touch with the whole idea of ‘right’.

The Taliban’s strict command about ‘no skin contact between women and unrelated men’ means rescuers leave injured but surviving women under earthquake rubble, even as they retrieve the dead first.

Taliban's 'no skin contact with males' rule leaves Afghan women under quake rubble
Many women remain trapped and overlooked after the deadly earthquake in Afghanistan, as male rescuers prioritise efforts on men and children due to Taliban's strict “no skin-contact” rule.

We also discussed broader topics, such as the City Council's commitment to tackling the climate and biodiversity emergencies, and, in these worrying times of rising racist and far-right sentiment, the work we do to bring our communities together and make everyone feel welcome.

Lovely morning out talking to residents in Newnham, supporting them with a wide range of issues, including broken fences, Council Tax and pest control.

The book documents some of the many moving and powerful moments, speeches and themes from those protests, as well as the wonderful community and solidarity that has built up among attendees.

Today I picked up my copy of a very special book! 'Cambridge Stands with Ukraine' has been produced by attendees of the regular King's Parade protests, which have now been taking place for three and a half years.

There's so much great work already being done in Cambridge to prevent and relieve homelessness, but we need to do more, across society.

It was great to take part in a wide-ranging and lively discussion on homelessness at The Cambridge Room yesterday evening. It was particularly powerful to hear from Kerrie and Kacper about their experiences of homelessness.
