I'm an adjunct professor at a couple of small schools. As soon as I became aware of this issue, I corrected my behavior and began to check all sources -- not just making sure they were real, but checking that the quoted material was present in the document cited. The results were not encouraging.

Now, the big thing here is to recognize that this problem exists because students don't value papers -- and a big part of that is caused by inattentive instructors not reading thoroughly. The modern university is antithetical to that, but I think it's necessary to try.
