On the 1rst of July 1863, the Dutch government officially abolished slavery in Suriname and in the Dutch Antilles. However, the enslaved people from Suriname will have to wait 1873 to become fully free, while the slaveowners were financially compensated for the "loss" of their slaves. (2/2)

1st of July is the celebration day of the abolition of slavery in Suriname and in the Dutch Antilles. Called #KetiKoti ('the chain is cut' in Sranantongo), this celebration day marks the Emancipation Day of Suriname. (1/2)
