How that is done remains the question but there are a number of ways to do it. Working and middle class people should view the university as something that belongs to them the same way students, faculty and alumni do. The universities are more than capable and willing to facilitate such a culture.
Not all students go to College - we need to make that ok. It’s time to scale up successful programs that create multiple pathways for students so high school is a gateway to both college and career.

Working people should view their local and now with digital technology, universities across the country as theirs and not something that is against them or wouldnt welcome them. The merging of the working class and the university could create the power the workers unions of the past had.

The separation of the American university and the American worker is complete bullshit and needs to be ended immediately. Workers can and should be the intellectual backbone of this country and although them getting a bachelors degree isn’t necessary, that’s far from the university’s lone role.

Universities should have a new degree program potentially for people who didn’t start school right after high school and got a full time job in manufacturing or in mechanics and those programs could offer licenses and certifications that could work with their employers.

But they never go because high school was brutal to them. Some more than others but even just being told that they weren’t part of the groups that were going for these ‘step up’ careers is bullshit and something they of course are going to find as such. College isn’t that at all and should reach out

As a person who didn’t have a privileged life in high school, along with most of my friends from that time, most of us found the university of Wisconsin to be far more of a welcoming environment than our high school was & that would be the case for many of these folks who feel school isn’t for them.

It shouldn’t be viewed as a step down or even separate from the same colleges and universities that their peers are going to for ‘white collar’ jobs. The university of Wisconsin has a ton of agricultural and manufacturing programs for student and the culture that those students would love.

The divide that so many people who work these ‘blue collar’ jobs feel towards those who work ‘professional level’ jobs is so toxic and possibly the main catalyst as to why our politics have become what they’ve become. When young people consider a career and want to work in ‘blue collar’ environments

I think there should definitely be more programs for people in manufacturing and more of these trade schools but those careers being treated as separate and antithetical to careers that are typically thought of in accordance with 4 year universities and post graduate is not right on multiple fronts.

Really need a replica printout of that scary tariff board trump brought out on liberation day. White House could make a bunch of money off that, surprised they haven’t done more merchandising, need that ‘LIBERATED’ coffee cup too.
Have we “won” the trade war yet?
April 8, 2025 at 6:42 PM
thats also why it was called 'liberation day' and it was made into this big deal, its the big thing that Putin is paying him to do. if this tariffing was about creating a petitioning the king conundrum, even if done poorly, it wouldn't be delivered in this way. then again, who the hell knows?
Breaking news: President Trump threatened additional 50 percent tariffs on China if it did not rescind its retaliatory trade measures, in the newest intensification of the president’s global trade war.

I think the most obvious answer to all of this is that hes just working for Vladimir Putin, who paid him a bunch of money. it's not that difficult of a thing to figure out. the whole rollout of this shit is obviously just to cause mass disruption. he already basically confirmed its intentional.

bridging this divide could end up literally saving the country from putting up with the disrespectful bullshit that has been directed at working people through these campaigns that appeal to them as basically white trash and proud. theyre not proud of that and want dignity. universities offer that.

if the people I work with on a daily basis had engagement with any number of universities, whether through online lecture access, direct communication with faculty and researchers, they would feel part of that process and not feel like its something not for them.

the other side of 'woke academia' is so fucking insulting to so many hard working people' intelligence and their appeal is almost always to treat these folks as trashy dullards. its fucking awful and colleges can and should do much better at reaching these folks in a respectful and real way.

the importance of bridging the gap between working class people without a degree and the universities themselves has to improve. whether thats through offering more public access to resources or events, it is super important, not just for the future of education, but of the country as a whole.

You have to wonder if they’re telling the banks and major corporations about the external revenue service and the reimplementation of a global tariff system as their vision for the world. I can’t wait to hear their responses to all of this bullshit

I genuinely hope the one thing both parties, especially in the senate, take from this is that our govt is in far better hands when controlled by congress rather than what party has someone writing all these executive orders. We’ve had good democrats in office for forever, ppl just don’t know them.
This is a very sharp thread from Senator Murphy on how Trump's tariffs are a form of political coercion designed to impose authoritarian control over the economy.

It's really on point, and another example of Murphy leading in new and interesting ways. I think the guy genuinely gets it.
Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

We will see the 1932 election all over again.
After tariffs dramatically raise the cost of basic goods, acting as a regressive, compounding sales tax that disproportionately harms those in the lowest income bracket... What happens when Republicans gut Medicaid, which covers half of adults in poverty? 72M people in total.
