Lovely warm evening (unseasonably so, even for California) - sunset approaching, dappled light in the trees ... & puffs of feathers blowing in the neighbor's yard in the light breeze. It all means one thing: our local Cooper's hawk is back w/ another dead pigeon dinner. #Wildlife #Photography

I grew up with the Warren Mastodon without realizing it. This model, which I assembled with my (very patient) dad back when I was a young boy, is based upon the famed New York skeleton. (Apologies for the poor glue job, I've since gotten a bit better.) #FossilFriday

For #FossilFriday: skeleton of an American mastodon, Mammut americanum, on display at the American Museum of Natural History @amnh.org in New York City, NY, US. This is the Warren Mastodon, discovered in 1845 in Newburgh, New York - the first complete mastodon skeleton ever found in the US. 🧪

It turned out okay, the UK has other food options (obvi). But those cheese fries remain ... rather offensive. Do better, UK.

Buzz is clearly fascinated by dinosaurs! The avian kind, at least. Pigeon remains courtesy of the Cooper's hawk who hangs out in the trees in our yard & helps keep the local pigeon population down. Buzz says thank ya! #Caturday #CatsOfBluesky

The "Missourium" toured the US until 1843, when it was purchased (for £1300!) by the British Museum at the behest of none other than Sir Richard Owen, who then directed its disassembly, elimination of extraneous bones (& wood blocks), & the correct re-assembly into the skeleton as seen today. 🧪

For #FossilFriday: a skeleton of an American mastodon on display, Natural History Museum, London, UK. This particular skeleton, originally discovered in Missouri, US in 1840, was later "augmented" with additional vertebrae and ribs & named "Missourium" to distinguish it from standard mastodons. 🧪

My wife and I saw Claude at the Academy back in 2021 as part of our 25th anniversary celebration trip. He was very special. I'm so sorry to learn of his passing; he will be missed.

Boris and Sasha keeping warm - and keeping *me* warm - through the cold winter evening. (That's southern California "cold", it's actually only in the mid 60s. But I'll take the cuddles.) #Caturday #CatsOfBluesky

#OTD in 1859, Charles Darwin published his landmark work, "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life". Our understanding of life and living things has never been the same since. #Darwin #Evolution #OriginOfSpecies 🧪

I'm home from a few weeks of travel overseas & the kitties like Boris here all seem very happy to see me ... but my sinuses are forcibly reminding me that I actually do have a minor allergy to cats. Gonna take a bit to re-acclimate. Still, let the snuggles commence! #Caturday #CatsOfBluesky

For #FossilFriday: one of the very first fossils of the American mastodon ever discovered. This specimen was found at Big Bone Lick, KY, US, in 1739 by a French military expedition, then sent back to Paris for study. On display at the Galerie de Paléontologie et d’Anatomie comparée in Paris. 🧪
