Interesting related paper by my colleague Alexandra Asimov, which shows no relevant selection effect differences between modes, but higher measurement error for some items with self-administered modes www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Very well summarized. Longitudinal surveys are reducing interviewer administration, too. None of the newer panels use in-person interviewing at all, to my knowledge
